Worpswede combines art history with trails through the landscape of the Devil’s Moor. The area is known for wide horizons, special light and an unspoilt landscape. The surroundings of the village also include Weyerberg, mixed woodland, open pastureland and moorland. You can plan your stay around museum visits and exploring on foot or by bike.

Discover art history in museums

Six museums in Worpswede showcase the village’s art history through collections and special exhibitions. Barkenhoff, Große Kunstschau Worpswede, Haus im Schluh and Worpsweder Kunsthalle present coordinated exhibitions showcasing the diversity of Worpswede art.

The restored Barkenhoff ensemble houses the Heinrich Vogeler Museum, with an extensive exhibition on the artist’s life and work. Special exhibitions may change; it is best to check current dates before your visit.

Haus im Schluh places Heinrich Vogeler’s work in the context of his artistic and personal life. The historic rooms are furnished with paintings, furniture, Art Nouveau objects and personal mementos. The site also includes a historic hand-weaving workshop, where visitors can watch trained weavers at historic looms and buy woven products in the museum shop. Whether the workshop is open during your visit may vary.

The Museum am Modersohn-Haus presents the Bernhard Kaufmann Collection in the former home of Paula Modersohn-Becker and Otto Modersohn. Its modern extension displays works by Fritz Mackensen, Hans am Ende, Fritz Overbeck, Otto Modersohn and Heinrich Vogeler, who belong to the founding generation of Worpswede painters. Käseglocke offers a different perspective: the round house, designed by Bruno Taut in 1926, is now used as a museum of regional applied art.

Explore the Devil’s Moor on foot and by bike

The Weyerberger Sliekpad starts at the Worpswede Tourist Information Office and passes particularly scenic spots in the artists’ village and on Weyerberg. Check the trail details locally before setting out. The Breites Wasser walking route starts in Worpswede Neu Helgoland. Conditions and access may change seasonally, so take this into account when planning.

The two trails have different starting points and lead to different parts of the Worpswede area. Together with the varied landscape, they offer a reason to set aside time for outdoor exploration as well as museum visits. The routes described here do not provide enough information to determine a specific walking time or distance.

Cyclists will find ADFC-standard signposting and a numbered junction network in and around Worpswede. These make it possible to tailor routes ranging from short rides to multi-day tours. Check the signs and digital route information before setting out.
