Bad Essen offers a range of activities for a stay: you can visit dinosaur tracks, choose trails of around 1.5 to 19 kilometres, explore the Salt Park or plan cultural activities. The routes differ considerably in length and layout. This makes it easier to decide in advance whether you would like to include a shorter local loop or a longer tour in your trip.
Circular Routes and Hiking Trails in Bad Essen
Three Bad Essen terrain therapy circular routes start at the entrance to the Salt Park, opposite the outdoor saltwater pool. They are between three and five kilometres long. A shorter option is the digital town walk: this approximately 1.5-kilometre circular route starts and ends at the SoleArena. Its stops are the Himmelsterrasse, the Old Watermill, the Sheepfold, Landhotel Buchenhof, the Old Pharmacy, Karlsplatz, St. Nikolai Church, the Historic Church Square, HĂĽnnefeld's Mortuary House and the Coffee Mill. The town walk therefore passes a series of named stops, while the terrain therapy routes offer another choice for walks and exercise, with their varying lengths.
If you are looking for a longer route, there are several clearly distinct options. The Castles Circular Route can be started at Harpenfeld village square, with its village pond and forge. Stretching just over nine kilometres, the route passes through meadows and parkland by Ippenburg Castle, over Roseninsel and on to Hünnefeld Castle, with its English landscape garden and Café Alte Rentei. The sequence of named stops and landscapes gives the tour its own distinctive focus.
At 19 kilometres, the TERRA.track Megalosaurus is the longest of the routes described here. It leads to Barkhausen, with views of the dinosaur tracks, and back to Bad Essen; along the way, you will climb 300 metres in elevation. The dinosaur tracks in Bad Essen-Barkhausen can be visited year-round and are freely accessible. Check the current access arrangements before travelling. Bad Essen also has four other TERRA.tracks, including Goethegang, Wildstein, HĂĽnnefelder Tannen and Schwarzer Brink. As route availability may change, it is advisable to check the status of the route in question before setting out.
Salt Park, Exercise and Water
At the Salt Park, you can explore various options for exercise and relaxation. The brine graduation tower at the SoleArena is freely accessible and in operation all year round. One of the three health trails runs along the PATH OF THE SENSES in the Salt Park. Interactive stations there invite you to listen, see, balance, smell, touch and taste. These stations offer something different from a straightforward walking route: alongside walking, the focus is on consciously experiencing a variety of sensory impressions.
At the SoleArena in Bad Essen's Salt Park, breathing, movement and relaxation exercises take place on Tuesdays from 1:30 to 1:50 p.m., under professional guidance. If you would like to plan around this session, confirm in advance that it is currently being offered. This lets you coordinate a scheduled activity with the rest of your day without confusing it with the circular routes described separately.
At Bad Essen Marina, you can stroll along the harbour promenade or hire a small boat on the Mittelland Canal without a boating licence. The 15 hp motorboats Pauline and Greta are available for trips. Check availability with the provider before your trip. Alongside the trails and the Salt Park, this gives you a choice of different options, including walks by the harbour and boat hire.
Art and Puppet Theatre
The “Schafstall” (Sheepfold) of the Bad Essen Art and Museum Society is a venue for art exhibitions. Its programme ranges from painting and applied arts to modern design. As exhibition dates change, check the current programme before visiting. This allows you to plan a visit to the Schafstall as a cultural activity without assuming a specific exhibition date.
Another cultural venue is the “Theater im Waggon” near the art school, where puppet theatre performances are staged. Check the current schedule if you are planning to attend a specific performance. Together with the exhibitions at the Schafstall, puppet theatre broadens the choice beyond nature and exercise activities; each of the two cultural venues has a different focus.
To plan your stay, compare the routes: the digital town walk is around 1.5 kilometres long, the terrain therapy circular routes cover three to five kilometres, the Castles Circular Route is just over nine kilometres, and the TERRA.track Megalosaurus is 19 kilometres long with 300 metres of elevation gain. Depending on your interests, add the Salt Park, harbour promenade, boat hire or cultural activities to your plans. If you are looking for a hotel in Bad Essen, you can first decide which of these themes you would like to shape your stay around.
