Moringen can be explored through a variety of themes: an industrial landmark, a memorial and two different places connected with water. If you are planning a stay, it helps to distinguish between their main features: the gasometer represents industrial technological history, the memorial focuses on the Nazi era, and at Opferteich Pond, local natural features meet legends.

Industrial History and Remembrance

The Moringen Gasometer industrial monument is the oldest surviving gas holder of this particular design in Lower Saxony. It stands on the grounds of Moringen’s municipal utilities. Inside the glazed area, a monitor shows a film about gas production, how the gas holder works, and the potential of future alternative forms of energy generation. This adds an explanation to the building’s distinctive features, ranging from gas production to possible energy sources of the future. If you plan to visit the interior, check the current access arrangements before your visit.

The Moringen Concentration Camp Memorial offers guided tours and workshops on the history of the historic site and critical engagement with Nazi ideology. Visits are possible by prior appointment only. Because the historic site is now used as a forensic psychiatric treatment centre, visitors may also enter only when accompanied. Be sure to arrange an appointment and an escort from the outset, and confirm the visit arrangements in advance.

Opferteich Pond and Flaakebad

Opferteich Pond is in the Oberdorf district, near Martini Church. It can be reached via a short spur path leading from MethestraĂźe to the grounds of the wax foundry. Tall trees and bushes surround the pond, which is fed by several bubbling springs. Legends and stories are associated with the site. A historical interpretation also links it to a pre-Christian ritual and court site. Here, a specific description of the surroundings meets a transmitted past presented as an interpretation.

Flaakebad offers a different water-related attraction: it has a 25-metre swimming pool, a non-swimmers’ area and a slide. The two waterside locations therefore differ clearly in what they offer: Opferteich Pond for its setting, springs and stories, and the swimming pool for its specified pool areas and slide.

A Distinctive Cultural Focus in Northeim

Within the wider destination of Northeim, the town of Northeim has its own historical and cultural focus. Its town wall was built between 1252 and 1305, and about half of it is still well preserved. The former pilgrims’ hostel of Sankt Spiritus houses the town museum and is one of Lower Saxony’s most significant Gothic half-timbered buildings.

The Theater der Nacht is another cultural venue in Northeim: since August 2001, it has been based in a converted former fire station. It works exclusively with puppets, masks and objects, and focuses on legends, myths and fairy tales. The wider destination therefore offers a range of cultural themes: in Moringen, these include industrial heritage and remembrance; in Northeim, local history, the museum and puppet theatre.

For your planning, the different visitor requirements are particularly important: visits to the memorial require an appointment and an escort; for the gasometer’s interior, check the access arrangements in advance. The places described also offer different thematic focuses, allowing you to shape your stay around the subjects that interest you most.
