Thomasburg brings together woodland and water with a distinct local history: the town lies right on the Neetze River, in a wooded setting and on the western edge of the Elbufer-Drawehn Nature Park. A public football pitch, accessible at any time, adds to the local scene. The wider LĂĽneburg travel destination offers additional nature and cultural themes of a different kind.

Woodland, the Neetze River and the Nature Park

Its location on the Neetze River and in a wooded setting describes its immediate connection to the landscape. Its position on the western edge of the Nature Park adds a regional perspective. This gives you two perspectives when choosing your destination: the town’s specific location and its connection to the larger natural area.

Behind the sports grounds, at the edge of the forest, is a football pitch that is open to the public at any time. It provides a specific outdoor location for an impromptu game of football.

Local history through the church and place name

Thomasburg was first documented in 1124 under the name “Totimesborg.” Alterations were made to St Peter and St Paul’s Church in Thomasburg in 1907/08: an entrance porch was added, the altar area was enlarged, and an organ gallery was installed. A porch is an extension projecting from a building; a gallery is a raised level inside a church. The changes therefore affected the entrance, the area around the altar, and a raised part of the interior. The early record of the name and the church alterations mark two clearly distinct points in the town’s history.

The erratic boulder circle near Breetze, in the Bleckede district, showcases erratic boulders as evidence of the glacial origins of the Elbe Urstromtal. It is freely accessible, and parking is available. As access details may change, check them before your visit. The megalithic tombs in Schieringer Forest, between Barskamp and Walmsburg, offer a different historical perspective. They were built during the Neolithic period, between 3000 and 2300 BC; a circular walking route from Walmsburg village square leads to the tombs. Geological evidence and prehistoric burial sites thus offer different ways of exploring the past.

In Amelinghausen, two circular routes can be distinguished by their length. The circular route around Lopausee Lake and through Lopaupark is 2.2 km long and suitable for jogging, walking, and Nordic walking. The Queen’s Trail is an 11-kilometre circular hiking route around the heathland town of Amelinghausen. This offers a clear contrast between a shorter route with several specified uses and a considerably longer hiking trail.

City and town hall tours in LĂĽneburg showcase its historic atmosphere, with gabled and brick houses, old alleyways, and the picturesque waterside district. For a view, visit LĂĽneburg Water Tower: its observation platform is 56 m high and offers views across LĂĽneburg and the surrounding area. Classical concerts are scheduled at LĂĽneburg Water Tower at 8 pm on the first Sunday of each month and every full moon. Check the dates before your trip.

At the Biosphaerium Elbtalaue in Bleckede, an aquarium landscape, live beavers, and more than 1,000 m² of modern exhibition space come together. This focus complements the historical tours and walking routes with another perspective on nature in the wider Lüneburg travel destination.
