Barum combines village history, a swimming lake and outdoor activities. In the district of St. Dionys, the focus is on a historic heathland village and the history of St. Dionysius Church. Lake Barum offers a different focus, with supervised swimming conditions and leisure facilities. There are also regional hiking and cycling routes, as well as an 18-hole golf course in the heathland. To plan your trip, you can first consider whether culture, water or exercise will shape your visit.

St. Dionys: Village history and accommodation

St. Dionys is a historic heathland village with 22 half-timbered houses with thatched roofs. The district was first documented in 1333. According to local tradition, Charlemagne founded the chapel in 795 that preceded the present-day church; this founding belongs to legend. The present-day St. Dionysius Church was built and consecrated in 1860 in the Neo-Gothic style. The dates refer to different historical points of reference: the legendary predecessor chapel, the first documentation of St. Dionys, and the consecration of the present-day church.

The church is generally open to visitors daily from April to September. Check the opening information again before your visit. Three guest rooms are located in the former Völker inn in the centre of St. Dionys. The building is a listed monument following extensive renovation. Check room availability before booking.

Lake Barum and regional routes

Lake Barum is one of the six EU-designated bathing sites monitored by the district. Water quality and swimming conditions may change seasonally; check the current situation before swimming. Leisure facilities at the lake include a campsite, canoe hire, a youth hostel, a sandy beach, a sunbathing lawn and a barbecue area. You should also check the operating status and availability of individual facilities in advance. For planning purposes, consider two things separately: seasonal swimming conditions and the operation of the various facilities.

Barum is connected to regional hiking and cycling routes such as the SamBa Tour and the Via Scandinavica. St. Dionys is also a popular stop for many cyclists on rides along the Ilmenau Cycle Route or the Via Scandinavica. Check the routes and signage before setting off.

Cafés, culture and golf

In St. Dionys, Café Balagan is a café-bistro and cultural venue with a cultural programme. It serves homemade cakes and often vegetarian snacks, offers organic Fairtrade coffee, and serves homemade pizza without additives. Cyclists and hikers are also welcome to stop for coffee. The food offering and cultural programme may change; check the latest information if the café or an event is a fixed part of your plans.

St. Dionys Golf Club offers an 18-hole course in heathland. The clubhouse serves regional cuisine with a Mediterranean influence. Golf and a meal in the clubhouse therefore offer different options when planning your trip. Check course details before your trip; the restaurant offering may change.
