Neermoor offers three distinct highlights for a stay: a historic gallery Dutch windmill with a waffle-iron exhibition, a church with an organ dating from the late 18th century, and a public swimming lake with a sandy beach. Architectural and cultural history sit alongside swimming and relaxing by the water. When planning your stay, you can prioritise these attractions according to your interests; the regional train connection is another practical consideration for your journey.

Neermoor Windmill: Architecture and Baking Tradition

Neermoor Windmill was built in 1884 as a three-storey gallery Dutch windmill. The octagonal section houses a waffle-iron exhibition. It focuses on East Frisian customs surrounding wafer-thin traditional New Year’s cakes and the waffle irons used to bake them. The building and exhibition offer different points of interest: the windmill represents architectural history, while the exhibition showcases a regional baking tradition. In the wider destination of Moormerland, guided tours of the windmill are regularly offered. If you plan to join a tour, check the visiting arrangements in advance.

The Church and Its Organ History

The Evangelical Reformed Church in Neermoor was completed in 1797. Its organ was built by Hinrich Just Müller of Wittmund between 1796 and 1798. The dates overlap: the church was completed during the organ’s construction period. Much of the original pipework, the wind chest and part of the keyboard have survived. The organ can therefore be considered both in terms of its construction period and its surviving original components. The church and instrument offer two historical points of reference whose timelines can be compared without conflating their construction histories.

The Swimming Lake and Time by the Water

The Hermann-Martens swimming lake in Neermoor is a public swimming lake with a sandy beach. It was the first public swimming lake in the municipality of Moormerland. On hot summer days, you can swim, cool off and relax here. The lake offers a different focus from the windmill and church, with swimming and relaxation by the water taking centre stage. This gives you a choice between historical attractions and a summer break by the lake during your stay.

Travelling by Regional Train

From 1 May 2026, passengers can travel by Westfalenbahn regional train line RE15 from Neermoor to Emden and towards MĂĽnster. Check the current timetable before travelling. This lets you factor the connection into your travel plans for your specific travel date.

More Routes in the Wider Destination of Moormerland

The wider destination of Moormerland has more routes focusing on cultural and landscape history. The 19 km Frauenleben Tour uses six information boards to bring to light the life stories of notable women from the past. The 30 km Kloster Route follows the traces of East Frisia’s former monastic landscape, which encompassed nearly 30 monasteries of various orders in the Middle Ages. At 27 km, the Siel Route focuses on sluices in dykes: it explains how they allow inland water to drain while withstanding the sea and storm surges. The routes vary in both length and subject, ranging from life stories and monastic history to the function of sluices.
