Pogum lies where the western Ems riverbank ridge meets the Dollart; the village includes a small Muhde harbor. The Wymeerer Sieltief fishing waters, the church with its distinct historical layers and a former summer tradition offer several ways to explore the village. There is also a viewpoint nearby and a cycling route in the wider region. This makes it easy to shape your stay around the water, culture or cycling.

Fishing on the Wymeerer Sieltief

The Wymeerer Sieltief is a stretch of fishing water between the Schafweg bridge in Pogum and the Dyksterhusen sluice. With a little luck, you may catch eel, pike, carp, zander, whitefish, tench or plaice there. The fishing waters on the Wymeerer Sieltief are generally accessible at all times; statutory closed seasons apply.

Fishing permits for the Wymeerer Sieltief are available at the Ditzum Tourist Information Office, Sielstr. 13, upon presentation of a sport fishing license. For a break, the rest areas at the Pogum pumping station offer several individual benches, picnic tables and a shelter. The facilities therefore provide places to sit alone as well as spots to linger at a table.

Church and local traditions

Pogum’s Evangelical Lutheran church is a hall church dating from 1776. Its organ was built by Johann Adam Berner in 1758/59, making it older than the church building. The church also contains tomb slabs from the 11th century, considered the oldest in East Frisia. The year the church was built, the organ and the tomb slabs thus represent different historical periods in one place.

The Dörphus Pogum can be rented by individuals or groups. It is open during special events, such as a May celebration, on New Year’s Eve and for a bathtub race. Another former tradition associated with Pogum is the Kreierrennen: it was held regularly in summer and attracted up to 1,000 spectators to the Dollart.

Viewpoint and cycling route in the wider area

Near Pogum, the former oil rig at Dyksterhusen offers a beautiful view across the Dollart sea bay. The International Dollard Route covers a different scale: in the wider region, this approximately 300-kilometer circular cycle route runs through the Lower Saxon districts of Leer and Emsland, as well as the Dutch province of Groningen. The viewpoint is a single scenic spot nearby, while the route covers a much larger cycling distance.

Historic places in the wider destination of Jemgum

The wider destination of Jemgum offers a distinct historical focus that complements a visit to Pogum. Jemgum’s former harbor was established on an old tidal creek that led inland from the Ems; the market square now stands there. Several buildings are also associated with specific dates: the Alba House in Jemgum dates from 1576, and the former weigh house from 1589. The Jemgum mill is a gallery Dutch windmill dating from 1756; the church there was built in the 13th century as the church of the Johanniterkommende (a commandery of the Order of St John).

The Jemgum Milk and Dairy Museum takes a different approach. Using exhibits and additional oral and written information, it explains the connections between milk production, processing and consumption. The region’s cultural attractions therefore encompass both architectural and local history and the history of the dairy industry.
