In Bunde, historic traces range from the Bunder Mill to the Protestant Reformed Church. The Dollart Nature and Culture Park adds signposted historic landmarks, while the Wymeer moorland area in the municipality of Bunde offers a different focus. When planning your trip, you can choose between architectural history, exploring by bicycle and discovering the moorland landscape.

Mill and church: architectural history in Bunde

The Bunder Mill was built in 1869 and expanded in 1911 into a four-storey gallery Dutch mill. Its features include an octagonal upper section and a brick base. The dates tell the story of two construction phases: the mill’s original construction and its later expansion.

In the town centre stands Bunde’s Protestant Reformed Church, formerly St Martin’s Church. It is one of East Frisia’s most noteworthy cross churches. The nave was built in the early 13th century; the other parts were constructed in several phases. This date therefore applies to the nave, while the building as a whole took shape over a longer period. The transept and rectangular choir display elements of the Romano-Gothic style.

Explore historic landmarks by bicycle

In the Dollart Nature and Culture Park, signs point to old dikes, mills, dike sluices and other historic landmarks. Visitors can explore and visit these sites by bicycle. This gives the park a broader perspective on regional history than a visit to a single building. The Dollart Museum is located at RheiderlandstraĂźe 3 in Bunde.

Cycling and moorland experiences in the municipality of Bunde

A paddle-and-pedal station is located in Ditzumerverlaat in the municipality of Bunde. From there, for example, you can take a trip to Ditzum and return by bicycle. This is a different kind of activity from exploring the signposted historic landmarks in the Dollart Nature and Culture Park.

The Wymeer nature reserve is primarily dedicated to conserving and developing a biologically active raised bog habitat. It also aims to improve and expand the habitats of endangered moorland plants. A wooden boardwalk runs through the moorland to wet areas. This lets you experience the moor without getting your feet wet and without disturbing its sensitive vegetation. While the park focuses on historic landmarks and exploring them by bicycle, Wymeer turns the focus to the moor and its habitats.

Cultural attractions in Leer

Leer offers other distinct cultural attractions. The Amsterdam-style gabled house Haus Samson has adorned the old town since 1643. The Leer Local History Museum focuses on East Frisian domestic culture and local seafaring. On two floors, the Bünting Tea Museum explores the cultivation, production and preparation of tea, as well as the history of East Frisia’s favourite drink. The Leer Telecommunications Museum takes visitors through 150 years of communications history and showcases rare exhibits and working technology.

A guided tour offers a different perspective from visiting individual museums: public city tours in Leer include sights such as the old town hall, the historic weigh house and Haus Samson. The tour lasts 1.5 hours. Evenburg Castle in Leer is a cultural monument of national significance and comprises the castle, park and outer bailey. Since May 2014, it has been open with a permanent exhibition on the life and livelihood of an aristocratic family in the 19th century, as well as serving as a centre for garden culture. Those interested in places of remembrance will also find the Former Jewish School Leer, a memorial and meeting place run by the District of Leer.
