Two brine towers, each more than 260 years old, stand in the spa park in Bad Salzdetfurth. In the same town, things to explore range from walks and signposted circular hiking trails to half-timbered houses, salt and mining. When planning your visit, you can decide whether to focus more on trail length, the townscape or the themes covered by the museums.

Spa Park, Trail and Old Town

Visitors can go for a walk in the spa park, where the two brine towers also stand. The Water and Salt Trail is marked by eight information boards in the spa park and old town. The town offers a free brochure about it. This means you can encounter the topic of water and salt on information boards in both areas.

The historic old town lies in a narrow valley among the hills of the Hildesheim Forest and Sothenberg. Half-timbered houses dating from the 17th and 18th centuries line the Lamme. For visitors interested in architecture, the houses’ precise dates and clearly described location by the river are a point of interest. The old town and spa park offer different highlights: half-timbered houses along the Lamme and brine towers in the park.

Choose a Circular Hiking Trail by Length

Ten signposted circular hiking trails are designated in Bad Salzdetfurth. They are between three and 13 kilometres long and start and finish at the Kultur Bahnhof. The distances make it easy to compare trail lengths: for a shorter loop, you can look to the lower end of the range, and for a longer one, to the upper end. All ten trails have the same starting and finishing point, which you can bear in mind when choosing.

If you would rather spend your time on a walk than a circular hike, you can stroll in the spa park. The signposted distances in kilometres offer a different planning guide for a hike. You can choose what to focus on: selecting a loop by its length or spending time in the park and old town.

Salt and Mining

A visit to the Bad Salzdetfurth salt grotto lasts 45 minutes. Visitors can sit on loungers or a salt bed. This set duration offers a different basis for planning than the hiking trails, whose lengths are given in kilometres.

The Bad Salzdetfurth Mining and Salt Museum displays exhibits on mining and the town’s history, as well as minerals and rocks from every continent. Its themes range from the history of the town and its mining industry to minerals and rocks from around the world.

At the saline, the Mining and Salt Museum lets the whole family experience the mineral’s journey from underground tunnels to the surface. The focus is on the mineral’s route from the mine to the outside world.

Rally and Adventure Golf

The children’s rally through the old town was originally created for the old town festival and is now a permanent activity. The spa park’s adventure golf course features 18 different holes. The rally leads through the old town, while the adventure golf course is located in the spa park. You can choose between these two different leisure activities without combining them into a single route.

Architecture in the Hildesheim Destination

In the wider Hildesheim destination, the Fagus Factory in Alfeld offers a distinctive architectural highlight. It is considered the first truly modern building and a pioneering work of modern industrial architecture. The factory houses a UNESCO visitor centre with interactive stations on the history of the World Heritage site and the core ideas of the World Heritage Convention. While half-timbered houses line the Lamme in Bad Salzdetfurth, the Fagus Factory turns the focus to modern industrial architecture.
