Helmstedt combines Renaissance architecture and university history with museums dedicated to the city and the former inner German border. Historic towers and leafy ramparts add to these themes in the urban landscape. When planning your trip, it is worth considering which aspects you would like to focus on: architectural history, the history of the university, or the story of the border.

University History and Renaissance at the Juleum

The Academia Julia opened in 1576 with faculties of theology, law, medicine and philosophy. It was one of the first Protestant universities in northern Germany. The Juleum Novum, the assembly building of the former university, was built later: from 1592 to 1597, it was constructed as a palatial Renaissance building. These two dates mark different chapters in Helmstedt’s history: the founding of the university and the construction of its prestigious assembly building.

The auditorium on the ground floor of the Juleum, the Auditorium Maximum, is used for concerts and lectures. These include academic talks as part of the Helmstedt University Days. The Juleum Tower also offers a special activity: the climb involves 153 steps and is available from April to October on the first Saturday of each month, between 11 a.m. and noon. Check the date before your trip if you would like to plan a climb up the tower.

Museums: University Life and Border History

The Helmstedt District and University Museum displays a model of the city from around 1750 and original objects from the university’s history. Exhibits include an astronomical disc, a globe and tableware from the university refectory. The model offers a view of the historic cityscape, while the objects illustrate various aspects of the university and everyday life there.

The Zonengrenz Museum Helmstedt focuses on a different period of history. In five sections, it documents the history of the former inner German border, from its beginnings to reunification. The exhibition uses original objects, photographs, models and life-size displays. The “Face of the Border” section includes an original wire-mesh fence, warning signs, mines, automatic firing devices and an overview model of the border fortifications. Visits and guided tours outside regular opening hours are available by prior arrangement; please arrange such a visit before you arrive.

City Gates, Events and Walks

The Helmstedt Hausmann Tower is the oldest surviving city gate in the region of Brunswick and the only one of Helmstedt’s four former gate towers to remain fully intact. From April to October, the week is rung out from the Hausmann Tower every Saturday at noon. This is a different schedule from the monthly climb up the Juleum Tower, which takes place on the first Saturday of the month. If you would like to attend a particular event, check the details before your visit.

The leafy, avenue-like ramparts invite you to take a stroll through the center of Helmstedt. Those interested in prehistoric remains can also visit the Lübbensteine nearby: these megalithic tombs were built between 3,500 and 3,000 BC on St. Annenberg, west of Helmstedt. The city’s medieval and more recent history thus contrasts with a much earlier archaeological site.

More Cultural Sites in the Wider Helmstedt Destination

The wider Helmstedt destination also includes cultural attractions in Königslutter and Schöningen. In Königslutter, the Imperial Cathedral, the cloister and the Kaiser Lothar Lime Tree on the former monastery grounds are among the most popular sights; the Imperial Cathedral is considered one of the most impressive Romanesque buildings in Lower Saxony. At the Museum of Mechanical Musical Instruments, guided tours explain how the instruments work. Almost all of them are functional and ready to be demonstrated.

In Schöningen, you can see the Schöningen spears close to where they were found. They were left there around 300,000 years ago and discovered in 1994; excavations are still taking place at the site. The Schöningen Adventure Trail runs for 2.5 kilometers from Burgplatz to the research museum and has eight stops with large information boards. These sites broaden the picture of the wider destination without conflating Helmstedt’s city history with attractions in other towns.
