Grethem combines a well-preserved rural village character with a history shaped by potash mining and blueberry cultivation. A surviving potash heap recalls the local mining industry; archaeological finds in the surrounding area add traces of Roman history to the picture. This gives the town several different points of interest for a trip that brings together local history and regional discoveries.

Potash Mining as Part of the Town’s History

The potash heap in Grethem is a surviving testament to local potash mining. Mining ended around 1923. The heap therefore points to a completed phase in the town’s history and to an industry that was once part of Grethem. The approximate date places the end of mining within the town’s history; the heap itself keeps its memory alive.

This contrast with the town’s rural village character is interesting when planning a trip: Grethem can be viewed through more than one local tradition. The heap represents the history of mining, while blueberry cultivation offers a different focus, shaped by agriculture.

Blueberry Tradition and Seasonal Produce

Grethem is considered the birthplace of the cultivated blueberry, which was first bred here. The botanist Dr. Heermann from Grethem began establishing a blueberry breeding and cultivation business in the 1920s. These beginnings led to Heermann’s Blueberry Country, with more than 60 hectares under cultivation. Both the early breeding work and the subsequent development of cultivation are therefore part of local history.

Fresh blueberries are available in Grethem from July to September. If this seasonal offering matters to your trip, this period gives you a concrete guide when choosing which month to visit. The blueberry tradition adds a different perspective on the town’s economic development to the history of potash mining.

Roman Finds in the Surrounding Area

An ivory comb found near Grethem is considered unique among the known Roman imports from the Roman imperial period in Germanic territories. Its handle plate is decorated with an exceptionally finely carved relief. The comb was probably made in an Italian workshop as early as the early Augustan period. Both this dating and the attribution to a workshop remain well-founded conjectures.

Another find adds to the archaeological picture: in 2006, two Hemmoor buckets that had been used as urns were recovered near Grethem. They are Roman non-ferrous metal buckets dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. The comb and buckets represent different archaeological finds and periods in the area around Grethem.

Across the Aller by Ferry

The Eickeloh cable ferry crosses the Aller between the banks at Eickeloh and Grethem. It is also a technical monument. This gives you a practical way to get between the two banks as well as another technical attraction in the region. If you plan to take the ferry, check the current timetable in advance.

Grethem in the Wider Destination of Heidekreis

The wider destination of Heidekreis offers additional cultural and landscape attractions. Walsrode Monastery is the oldest of the famous Lüneburg Heath monasteries. Ahlden Castle was built on the Alte Leine in 1579 and is associated with the banishment of Crown Princess Sophia Dorothea. Heidekreis also has signposted routes stretching for kilometres for cycling, hiking, Nordic walking and horse riding. These regional options complement Grethem’s local history with other points of interest.

When choosing when to travel, it helps to distinguish between seasonal produce and history that can be explored year-round: July to September is the stated period for fresh blueberries; the potash heap and archaeological finds offer historical points of interest. This can help you decide whether the blueberry connection or the local and regional history will be the deciding factor for your trip.
