Toppenstedt brings together two distinct themes for trip planning: the “Garlstorfer and Toppenstedter Wald” nature conservation area and the recurring Faslam tradition. If you are considering an overnight stay in Toppenstedt, you can first decide whether the forest landscape or a festive occasion should be the focus of your stay. For a broader view beyond the town, the wider Harburg destination offers additional regional perspectives.

Forest and landscape around Toppenstedt

The “Garlstorfer and Toppenstedter Wald” nature conservation area also extends across parts of the municipality of Toppenstedt in the Salzhausen collective municipality. It covers about 434 hectares and includes six forest habitat types listed in Annex I of the Habitats Directive. Another distinctive feature of the protected area is its occurrence of woodrush beech forests: it is one of the largest areas of these forests in the Lüneburg Heath and the Lower Saxon lowlands. The habitat types and the importance of these forests give the area two distinct ecological points of reference.

The Sotzenberg is also located near Toppenstedt. Its viewpoint makes it especially easy to take in and experience the landscape. This offers two different perspectives side by side: the protected area with its forest habitats, and a viewpoint focused on the surrounding landscape.

Faslam and other festival dates

Faslam is a recurring tradition in Toppenstedt. The 2026 edition ran from February 12 to 16 and was a five-day celebration featuring music, dancing, and living traditions for all ages. On February 15, the large Faslam parade wound through Toppenstedt from 1:30 p.m., followed by an after-show party. Schnorren provided the traditional finale on February 16, starting at 11:30 a.m. Together, these events show how the festival duration, parade, and finale were arranged in this edition.

The Schützenfest, held from July 10 to 12, 2026, also had its own program highlights, including a tattoo, the king’s shooting competition, and a children’s day. The dates listed refer to 2026. If you are planning for a later year, check the event dates for your travel year.

Harburg as a broader travel framework

The wider Harburg destination is shaped by a variety of landscapes, including the Elbe marshes, the Harburg Hills, the Nordheide, and especially the LĂĽneburg Heath. Cycling routes are also a feature of the district. A dense network of cycling routes crosses Harburg district, including 1,000 kilometres of signposted tourist cycling routes.

The district also offers a broader perspective for hiking trips. Opened in 2012, the Heidschnuckenweg runs for 223 kilometres from Hamburg through Harburg, Heidekreis, and Celle districts, as well as through more than 30 large and small heathland areas in the northern and southern heath. The trail is divided into 13 stages and is complemented by twelve heathland loop trails ranging from 1.4 to 20.9 kilometres in length. The cycling network and hiking trail are regional points of reference within the wider Harburg destination, while Toppenstedt’s specific local themes are its protected area and festivals.
