The area of the municipality of Rüdershausen is part of the “Rhumeaue, Ellerniederung, Schmalau und Thiershäuser Teiche” nature reserve. The landscape at the municipal level and the town’s architectural history offer different points of interest. The moated castle in Rüdershausen stands in the water; next to it is an attractively designed rest area in a shady hollow. The Catholic parish church of St. Andrew offers another way to explore the town’s history.

Landscape and routes in the surrounding area

The signposted T 19 cycle route passes through Rüdershausen. Before setting out, check whether the signs are still up to date. Nearby, a hiking route passes by fishing ponds and then follows the Carl-und-Veronika-Carstens hiking trail to its end. A walk in the direction of Rüdershausen also takes you past a 14 Holy Helpers stone. The route descriptions have different focuses: the hike describes a route via ponds and a named trail, while the walk features a single distinctive landmark.

St. Andrew’s and its architectural history

The current Catholic parish church of St. Andrew is located at Georg-Schreiber-Straße 8 and is at least the third church in Rüdershausen. A substantial predecessor church may have been built at the end of the 15th century; this dating is not certain. Architect Tochtermann from Hildesheim was commissioned to design a new church in Rüdershausen. Dean Theodor Vollmer was responsible for the dedication of the new church on 3 May 1874. St. Andrew’s is therefore associated with both a predecessor building whose date is uncertain and a precisely dated event from the 19th century.

More things to do in the wider Göttingen destination

The wider Göttingen destination offers its own highlights in science, urban history and green spaces. At Forum Wissen, visitors can learn about ongoing research and teaching. The permanent exhibition “Räume des Wissens” (Spaces of Knowledge) covers 1,400 square metres. Its twelve rooms contain more than 1,400 objects from the collections of the University of Göttingen and allow visitors to explore how knowledge is created. This offers a distinct thematic focus for travellers interested in research and teaching as well as local history.

The Göttingen Municipal Museum has been housed in Hardenberger Hof, the last surviving aristocratic palace in Göttingen, since 1897. The exhibition “Stadt. Macht. Glaube. Göttingen im 16. Jahrhundert” (City. Power. Faith. Göttingen in the 16th Century) is on display there until further notice; check the latest exhibition information before your visit. The museum offers guided tours of its permanent exhibitions and current special exhibitions for groups and school classes. The museum thus combines a specific historical exhibition focus with dedicated guided tours.

The Old Botanical Garden of Göttingen was founded in 1736 as a “hortus medicus”, or medicinal garden. Visitor highlights include historic greenhouses, tropical vegetation in the rainforest house and the alpine garden. For outdoor activities, the city forest on Hainberg offers opportunities for walking, hiking and cycling. A three-kilometre circular trail runs around the wildlife enclosure at Kehr, which is home to wild boar and fallow deer. Discover more destinations:
