Twist combines moorland landscapes with the history of oil and natural gas extraction. If you are looking for a hotel in Twist, you can plan your stay around these different interests: the Oil and Gas Museum offers a cultural and historical perspective, while Provinzialmoor and its designated trails are for nature and outdoor activities. The Moor-Energy Adventure Trail brings the history of oil and the moor together along one route. Twist therefore offers both a specific themed attraction and expansive landscapes to consider when planning your stay.

Oil History and Moorland on One Route

The Twist Oil and Gas Museum is accessible. If accessibility is important to your plans, check this information before your visit. The museum documents the pioneering work of the regional oil industry through around 100 historical photographs. Large items of oil and gas extraction equipment are on display outdoors. Historical images and large technical exhibits offer two different ways to explore the history of the industry.

The Moor-Energy Adventure Trail starts at the Oil and Gas Museum, passes oil pumps, and continues through Klein-Heseper Moor to the Moor Museum. It is about 11 kilometres long. The route brings together the history of extraction and the moorland landscape. Its approximate length gives you a specific point of reference when choosing between this themed trail and other nature destinations.

Moorland Landscapes and Leisure

Provinzialmoor is a 530-hectare nature reserve in Twist. From the XXL bench, you can enjoy an elevated view over a rewetted area of Provinzialmoor. In the Twist area, the Bourtanger Moor International Nature Park is associated with extensive moorland and heathland landscapes. This offers nature experiences ranging from a single viewpoint to vast landscapes.

Twist has just under 300 kilometres of designated cycling and walking trails. By comparison, the Moor-Energy Adventure Trail, at about 11 kilometres, is a single themed route: the two figures help distinguish a network of trails from a specific route. If you are more interested in industrial history, you can combine the museum with the trail; if you want to focus on the landscape, you can explore Provinzialmoor and the trail network.

Leisure activities also include swimming in a lake and pony riding. The Garden of the Nazarene is another leisure attraction in Twist. If swimming or pony riding is important to your plans, check what is currently available in advance.

The Wider Emsland Destination

The wider Emsland destination offers a broader perspective on nature and cultural trails. HĂĽmmling Nature Park covers around 580 square kilometres in the north-east of the Emsland district. Cycling and walking trails with information points along the way pass historical sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Baroque Castle.

The Emsland Route is a 395-kilometre circular route through five landscapes in Emsland: the Northern Ems Valley, HĂĽmmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Southern Emsland. It connects 19 towns; towns in Emsland along the route can serve as starting and finishing points. The route is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and traffic-free, making it particularly suitable for beginners and families with children.
