Two themes shape the picture of Renkenberge: a church history with a clearly stated date, and various connections to cycling, which differ in terms of a route, a stage stop and a seasonal club meet-up. Gut Renkenberge also offers a historical link to the history of the Emsland region.

Church and Local History

The newly built St. Anthony’s Church in Renkenberge was consecrated in 1953. Gut Renkenberge is a former Krupp estate and tells of the eventful history of the Emsland region. Alongside the church, the estate’s past and its connection to Emsland history are also part of the area’s historical story.

Cycling in Renkenberge

A tourism article dated April 10, 2023, presented a cycling route between Lathen-Wahn and Renkenberge that runs along the Melstruper Beeke. On the “Lathen 1 – Left and Right of the Ems” cycle tour, Renkenberge is one of the stage stops. The information points to different landmarks: the first names two endpoints and a route along the Beeke; the second lists Renkenberge as a stage stop on a named tour. Check current route conditions on the operator’s website before setting out on the stage route.

The Renkenberge sports club also has a cycling group. A notice dated September 22, 2026, described it as seasonal: the group set off from Renkenberge community centre on Wednesday evenings at 6:30 p.m., and new riders were welcome. Resuming the group the following year was planned. If you would like to join a ride, check the upcoming dates in advance.

The Emsland Region in a Wider Context

In the wider Emsland travel region, Hümmling Nature Park covers around 580 square kilometres in the district’s northeast. Cycling and hiking trails run through the nature park, passing historical sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Baroque Palace, with information points along the way. This brings together nature and culture in the wider region without conflating them with the local details of Renkenberge.

The routes in Hümmling Nature Park include the Theikenmeer Loop, which meets the quality criteria of the German Hiking Association. The Kranichpfad (Crane Trail) leads about 2.5 kilometres into the Theikenmeer nature reserve; the return journey follows the same route, making the total walking distance about five kilometres. The trail features a viewing platform with panoramic views of Lake Theikenmeer and the Wehmer Dose moorland, as well as a birdwatching hut on the lakeshore. When planning your route, you can take into account both the approximate walking distance and the nature observation facilities described.

Another regional cycling option is the Emsland Route: this 395-kilometre circular route passes through five landscapes in the Emsland region – Northern Ems Valley, Hümmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Southern Emsland. The route is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and car-free, and is particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. It connects 19 towns; any town in the Emsland region along the route can serve as a starting or finishing point. This gives you flexibility when planning a tour on the Emsland Route.
