In Niederlangen, moorland and nature trails meet a distinctive local history. The larger Niederlangen settlement developed in the Bourtanger Moor. The eastern part of Niederlangen, the area with an old agricultural character, belongs to the Ems glacial valley. Niederlangen was first mentioned around the year 1000 in the oldest surviving tax records of Corvey Abbey. These landscape and historical connections give the place its own character, without limiting a stay to a single theme.
Discover the moorland on foot
The Kapellenmoorgraben landscape covers about 50 hectares and is a habitat for endangered animals and plants. In the Kapellenmoorgraben Nature Reserve, walks and hikes offer ways to get to know the diverse flora and fauna. The Kapellenmoor – Hümmling Paths circular trail is 6.5 kilometres long, rated easy and starts at the Kapellenmoorgraben observation tower. This makes it possible to plan a specific walking distance for an outing, rather than treating nature observation as an undefined goal.
Eleven information boards and five points of interest are spread along the route, including the observation tower and a nature observation station. These stops add reasons to pay attention to the landscape and nature while walking the circular trail. The shelter at Kapellenmoorgraben is open at all times; a car park is located directly opposite. Before setting out, check the current route and practical access information, as these details may change.
Explore by bike
There are also different routes for cyclists: the Ross und Rad Route passes the Kapellenmoorgraben nature viewpoint near Niederlangen. Another route leads from Niederlangen through Sustrum to the Düthe lock on the Dortmund-Ems Canal and continues towards Lathen along the canal path. This offers two distinct options: a nature-focused visit to Kapellenmoorgraben and a cycling trip along the canal. Check the current route before setting out, as routes may change.
Historical and cultural discoveries
The Old Forge dates back to 1789 and is still in use. It adds a distinctive historical feature to the village. Visiting arrangements may change, so check in advance if you are planning a visit. Visits to the Doll Museum can be booked through the Bürgerhaus Alte Schule, Schulstraße 1 in Niederlangen. Check the booking and access information before your visit.
Another cultural point of interest is the Terhorst mill shop, which offers nearly 200 of its own spices, herbs and blends. The selection adds a culinary dimension to a stay, without requiring a wider range of dining options. As the product range may change, check the current selection before visiting.
The wider Emsland destination
Within the wider Emsland destination, Hümmling Nature Park offers a broader landscape perspective: it covers around 580 square kilometres in the northeast of the Emsland district. Cycling and hiking trails, with information stations along the way, pass historic sites, megalithic tombs and Clemenswerth Baroque Palace.
The Emsland Route is another distinct regional offering: this 395-kilometre circular route passes through five landscape areas – Northern Ems Valley, Hümmling, Bourtanger Moor, Hasetal and Southern Emsland. The route is very well signposted, mostly flat, paved and free of motor traffic, making it particularly suitable for beginners and families with children. It connects 19 towns; any town in Emsland along the route can serve as a starting point or destination. This helps distinguish Niederlangen’s local trails and sights from the wider routes across Emsland.
