85 percent of the island of Norderney is part of the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park. At the same time, the island offers everything from extensive hiking and cycling trails to museums, exhibitions and guided water activities. When planning your trip, you can choose between nature, culture and individual excursions.

Getting there and finding your way

The ferry from Norddeich Mole to Norderney takes about 55 minutes. Check the timetable for your travel day when making specific plans for the crossing. The Watt Welten UNESCO World Heritage Wadden Sea Visitor Centre Norderney is located right at the ferry terminal. Its location makes it an easy landmark to find on arrival.

Nature and trails on Norderney

Norderney has around 80 kilometres of hiking and cycling trails. One named route is the 13.2-kilometre Strandweg: it runs from Georgshöhe via Nordbadestrand, Weiße Düne and Oase to Ostende. These details answer different planning questions: the network includes both types of trails, while the Strandweg is a specific route with set stops.

Explore the dune landscapes on foot or by bicycle. Viewing platforms in the dunes offer 360-degree views across the island and the open sea. Four Thalasso platforms provide sweeping views over the sea to the lighthouse and the far end of the island. Another viewpoint is Norderney Lighthouse: it is 54 metres high and has 254 steps. From there, you can see across Norderney and the Wadden Sea World Heritage Site.

At the far end of the island is another destination for a longer hike: the wreck of the “Capella” mussel dredger, which dates from 1968. It can be reached from the last car-accessible car park, “Ostheller,” via a seven-kilometre hike. So, alongside the viewpoints, the island’s exploration also takes in a route to a specific historic relic.

Island history and culture

The Museum Nordseeheilbad Norderney presents the development of the seaside resort, the history of the island and travel and bathing culture in a permanent exhibition covering 650 m². It also hosts special exhibitions throughout the year on art and cultural history and significant historical events on Norderney. The museum thus combines a lasting overview of the resort’s development with changing exhibition topics.

The history of the town also provides a timeline for these themes: Norderney has been an official North Sea resort since 1797, making it Germany’s oldest official North Sea resort. The Conversationshaus on Kurplatz houses the tourist information office, advance ticket sales for events and films, and the NorderneyCard service centre. Various exhibitions are held regularly in the building’s Orangery.

Activities and events

For a guided activity on the water, Surfschule Norderney offers kayak tours on the Wadden Sea side. The route runs from the marina to the lighthouse. The Badehaus Norderney offers another way to enjoy seawater through thalassotherapy: treatments include wraps, scrubs and massages using marine mud and seaweed, seawater baths, and exercise therapy in and around seawater.

The annual Norderney Easter bonfire takes place on Westbadestrand. If you want to plan your trip around it, check the dates for the year of your visit. For the rest of your planning, it helps to decide on your main focus first: trails and viewpoints, island and bathing culture, or a specific water activity each suggest different ways to spend the day, which you can take into account when choosing your stay.
