Cappeln (Oldenburg) brings together landscape and cultural attractions: You can hike in the Cappelner Bruch, while Quatmannsburg, the parsonage and the Eberborg Monument offer different historical points of interest. A visit to a garden is another local option – advance registration is required.

Nature between marshland and stream

The Cappelner Bruch is a 145-hectare protected landscape area where you can go hiking. The Tenstedter Bruch offers a different kind of landscape: In Cappeln-Tenstedt, a 470-hectare floodplain and marsh forest extends across the area, with small bodies of water and meadows. The Bakumer Bach flows through the area, which provides a habitat for numerous endangered plant and animal species. The two landscapes therefore differ not only in size, but also in the explicitly mentioned hiking opportunity in the Cappelner Bruch and the diverse habitats described in the Tenstedter Bruch.

Architectural history and cultural heritage

The early to high medieval Quatmannsburg is located in Elsten. In the district of Cloppenburg, it is considered the best-preserved and most impressive site of its kind; the entire complex is a listed monument. The parsonage in Cappeln offers a different architectural point of interest: Built in 1711, the half-timbered building underwent extensive renovation in 2001 and is adorned with delicate decorative details. It stands opposite St. Peter and Paul Church.

Horse breeding is also part of the local identity. Gestüt Vorwerk in Cappeln is Europe’s oldest private stallion breeding station and is known beyond the state’s borders. In Sevelten, the Eberborg Monument commemorates the Eberborg story of 1929. The granite monument was created by the artist Nickels from Cloppenburg.

A garden visit by appointment

In Nutteln, you can visit the Hof Sontag country garden by prior arrangement. Please arrange your visit with the garden in advance. The grounds lie amid woodland, meadows and fields. Mature oak trees, a variety of garden areas and colorful flower borders shape its character. This gives the garden a different focus from the protected marshland or historic buildings: the emphasis is on its landscaped garden areas and their setting within the surrounding countryside.

A glimpse of the wider Cloppenburg destination

In the wider Cloppenburg destination, the Cloppenburg Museum Village – Lower Saxony Open-Air Museum uses around 60 historic buildings to offer a glimpse into the living conditions of the rural population of northwestern Germany. The period covered extends from the late Middle Ages to the 1980s. This view of the region neatly complements Cappeln’s local themes with a distinct cultural and historical focus in the wider Cloppenburg destination. For comparison, the wider Cloppenburg destination offers further nature and outdoor activities: The Thülsfelder Talsperre adventure trail has 14 interactive stations. The approximately 2,000-hectare woodland and heathland area of Dwergter Sand in Molbergen has an extensive network of cycling, hiking and riding trails.
