Eicklingen can be explored through two themes: the history of the former district bailiwick and the municipality’s natural monuments. Individual oak trees and the dune ridge near Sandlingen provide specific points of reference in the landscape.

Administrative Manor and Historical Use

Built in 1830, the Eicklingen administrative manor was formerly the Eicklingen district bailiwick. The historic administrative building in Eicklingen developed from the floor plan of a Lower Saxon farmhouse. At the beginning of the 19th century, it had wallpaper from Paris, extensive stables, an apartment for the court attendant, a prison, and a bakehouse. This mix of living quarters, a prison, stables, and a bakehouse shows how varied its former use was.

Since 2005, the Eicklingen administrative manor has housed the Lower Saxony Information and Competence Centre for Rural Areas. People involved in rural development planning, members of the public, planners, specialists, and staff from administrative offices and authorities meet there to learn and exchange ideas. Alongside its former role as a district bailiwick, the manor is therefore also associated with information and discussion about rural development.

Natural Monuments and Landscape

Eicklingen is home to ND-CE 67, an individual oak, and ND-CE 130, the Lauseiche oak; both are listed as natural monuments. Near Sandlingen, the dune ridge is designated as an area-based natural monument. The range therefore extends from individual trees to a natural monument covering an area.

The landscape includes hedgerows and small patches of woodland that define Eicklingen. It is well suited to observing wildlife and birds. Thus, specifically named natural features sit alongside a landscape theme focused on animals and birds. Those primarily interested in individual natural monuments will find different points of interest here than those observing the landscape.

Granary and Marksmen’s Festival

The oldest granary in the Südheide stands in Paulmannshavekost. Eicklingen’s marksmen’s festival takes place every four years. If you would like to factor the festival into your travel plans, it is best to check the specific event dates.

More to Explore in the Wider Celle Destination

In the wider Celle destination, the Südheide Nature Park has ten signposted themed cycling routes with a total length of more than 400 kilometres. There are also 23 themed hiking trails, five nature trails, and three long-distance hiking trails. This selection has a different focus from Eicklingen’s local history: here, cycling and hiking routes take centre stage.

A shorter walk is also part of what Celle has to offer: the loop through Celle’s Old Town covers 3.22 kilometres from the Duke’s Palace in Celle to the synagogue and is classified as a very easy walk. This is a clearly specified route option, while the cycling and hiking trails in the nature park offer a wider selection of different tours.

For a cultural and historical focus in the wider Celle destination, there is also Wienhausen Monastery. The former Cistercian monastery is considered an example of North German Brick Gothic and half-timbered architecture. Its medieval art treasures include tapestries from the 14th and 15th centuries, as well as a painted nuns’ choir. Expert commentary on the Gothic tapestries is provided for one week each year, traditionally starting on the Saturday after Pentecost. Check the specific dates before your trip.
