Upleward offers a 9,000-square-metre dry beach, a medieval church and guided walks on the Wadden Sea starting from the kiosk. The options range from play and sports facilities to Gothic architecture and an activity with varying dates.

Leisure at the Dry Beach

Upleward’s dry beach lies directly behind the dike. Sand, water play and play equipment—including a pirate ship—make this an area focused on leisure. Seating areas provide places to take a break; volleyball and beach soccer add sporting options. The choices therefore range from play and water activities to ball sports.

The dry beach is free to use. Facilities include a playground, toilets, step-free access, parking, a restroom building and a kiosk. Check the facilities and accessibility again before your trip, as they may change.

Gothic Architecture and Historic Features

Upleward’s church was built in the first half of the 14th century as a rectangular, single-nave Gothic brick church. Its exterior walls feature elaborate blind arcades. These are decorative arch shapes set into the wall that divide the façade without creating open passageways. Some pointed-arch windows have survived in their original form; above a former entrance is a trefoil arch. These specific features offer a way to appreciate the architecture: the brick construction, the façade design, and the surviving window and arch forms.

Inside is an 18th-century pulpit. Surviving traces of wall paintings are thought to represent apostle crosses. Remains of a sacrament house from the church are on display at the mill museum in nearby Pewsum. When visiting, note the distinction: the pulpit and traces of paintings are inside the church, while the remains of the sacrament house can be seen at the museum in Pewsum.

Admission to the church is free seasonally. Parking is available nearby, and bus service is provided by route 422. Check the seasonal opening hours before your visit. If you plan to travel by bus, consult the route 422 timetable.

Planning Walks on the Wadden Sea

Walks on the Wadden Sea start at the kiosk next to the dry beach. Walks run by the Greetsiel National Park House also start there. Dates and booking requirements may vary for some walks. If you have a particular tour in mind, check both in advance rather than assuming there is a fixed date. This lets you factor the walk into your travel plans based on its specific dates.

The different attractions also involve different planning considerations: at the dry beach, it is about facilities and how you can use them; at the church, it is about architectural features and seasonal opening; and for a walk, it is about the date and possible booking requirements. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide which of these considerations matters most for your trip, then check the relevant information.
