Suurhusen appeals to travellers who appreciate architectural history and everyday history as distinct subjects. The historic church and the Farmworkers’ Museum offer two perspectives: the development of a religious building on the one hand, and the living and working conditions of farmworker families in the marsh villages on the other.
Historic Church in Suurhusen
The church in Suurhusen was built in the first half of the 13th century. When the tower was added in 1450, the nave had to be shortened by about a quarter. The church tower has an inclination of 5.19 degrees. Visits to the tower are possible by arrangement; guided tours are available by appointment. Arrange visit and tour times locally before your trip.
Farmworkers’ Museum: Changing Ways of Life
The Suurhusen Farmworkers’ Museum explores the living and working conditions of farmworker families in the marsh villages from around 1900 to 1950. It is housed in a historic building dating from 1688, which was restored to reflect its condition in 1900.
Culture in the Wider Destination of Hinte
The windmill in Hinte is a three-storey gallery Dutch windmill, built in 1869. The painting gallery and the Frisian Room inside the mill can be opened by prior arrangement; mill tours are also available by appointment. Arrange these options locally before your trip.
Hinte’s water castle was built in 1438 on the remains of Osterburg and has retained the character of an East Frisian chieftain’s castle to this day. It is privately owned and inhabited, so it can only be viewed from the outside. Check local visitor information before your trip. When planning a cultural visit in Hinte, there are two different options: the mill combines a gallery, the Frisian Room and tours, all of which are available only by prior arrangement; the water castle is limited to an exterior view because it is privately owned and inhabited. Which option appeals to you more depends on whether you prefer an arranged mill visit or viewing the castle from the outside.
The church in Hinte is a hall church dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, with a polygonal choir, and is one of the few late Gothic church buildings in East Frisia. Remnants of late Gothic floral decoration remain in the choir, including a depiction of Christ as the Judge of the World, created around 1500. The church also has a sandstone chalice-shaped baptismal font dating from 1569. Its construction period differs from that of the Suurhusen church, which dates back to the first half of the 13th century.
