The rhododendron park makes Gristede a seasonal destination for excursions; several cycling routes also lead to it. Two questions are especially useful when planning a trip: Would you like to experience the flowering season, or is a cycling tour with the park as its destination your main focus? The botanical collection and the various routes offer different ways to plan your visit.

Rhododendron Park Gristede: Flowering Season and Collection

Rhododendron Park Gristede is a 25-hectare display garden in the Gristede Forest. Its collection includes more than 1,000 different varieties of rhododendrons and outdoor azaleas; there are also two pond areas and a park pavilion. The park is generally at its most impressive between May and June, when it becomes a colourful landscape of flowers. This period offers useful guidance if you are planning a stay focused on the blooms. The ponds and pavilion add other clearly identified features to the garden's plant collection.

One variety is also associated with a specific event: comedian Otto Waalkes christened the rhododendron variety “OTTOdendron” on 23 June 2019.

Cycling to Rhododendron Park

The 45 km cycling tour “45 km Rhodopark Gristede” leads to the rhododendron park and can be ridden independently using the published directions. Downloadable route files may be revised, so check the file you are using before setting off. The “Rhododendron Route”, “Residenzort und Rhododendronstadt” and “Tour de Flur” also lead directly to the park by bicycle. This makes it possible to include the park as a destination in different route plans; the length of the 45 km tour is also explicitly stated.

Gristeder Hof is a German restaurant, beer garden and excursion destination. Check the current information about its offerings before visiting.

Cultural History in the Wider Destination of Wiefelstede

Those wishing to explore cultural history will find other distinct themes in the wider destination of Wiefelstede. St. John's Church in Wiefelstede was consecrated in 1057 by Archbishop Adalbert of Bremen and is considered the oldest church in the Ammerland. In the centre of Wiefelstede, the local history museum hosts changing exhibitions on cultural history, everyday life and regional artistic activity.

The local history museum's garden has become an open-air museum with a permanent exhibition on trade and crafts using technology from the 1920s and 1930s. The exhibition includes a shoemaker's workshop, a hairdresser's shop, a wheelwright's workshop, an old forge, a bakery and a general store. The changing museum exhibitions are thus complemented by a permanent display of historic shops and crafts.

The waymark at the Wemkendorf burial mound is also among the cultural attractions of the wider destination of Wiefelstede. It marks a Bronze Age chain of burial mounds. The two-metre-high concrete stele, designed by Barbara Jaros, bears a cast-bronze ornamental pin and is part of the Ammerland Art Trail's “Forgotten Places” project.

When looking for a holiday apartment, it helps to decide what you want to focus on: the usual flowering period provides a guide for a seasonal visit to the park, while the named cycling tours make the park accessible as a cycling destination. The cultural sites in the wider destination of Wiefelstede form a separate theme alongside Gristede's park and route attractions.
