Bad Zwischenahn combines traces of history with activities on the water and in the countryside. St. John's Church dates back to 1124, while the Ammerland Farmhouse explores what life was like 300 years ago. A boat trip on the Zwischenahner Meer adds a clearly defined activity to your itinerary. When planning a stay, you can choose from a range of themes: history, gardens, water, cycling or moorland.

Church, Farmhouse and Mill

St. John's Church was founded in 1124 by Count Egilmar, the first hereditary count of Oldenburg, as a daughter church of Wiefelstede. Its interior includes, among other things, a medieval wall cabinet and a 15th-century baptismal font. The church's founding and these two features point to different periods: the church dates to the Middle Ages, while the baptismal font is from a later century.

The Ammerland Farmhouse is one of the oldest open-air museums of its kind in Germany. Located in the heart of the spa gardens, it comprises 17 houses and outbuildings, harmoniously integrated into the landscape. The site offers a glimpse of what life was like 300 years ago. The museum's history also includes the 1811 windmill, which was initially erected in neighbouring Westerstede. It is a two-storey gallery Dutch windmill: its working millstones are used for grinding grain, while its edge runner is used for oil production. Historic buildings and mill technology thus offer distinct ways to explore the area's history.

Gardens with seasonal highlights

In May and June in particular, magnificent rhododendrons in vivid colours define Bad Zwischenahn's spa gardens. The Park of Gardens offers a different focus: its 140,000 square metres provide ideas and inspiration for home gardens, and the park also offers opportunities to enjoy nature and culture or simply relax. While the rhododendrons make the spa gardens a particularly seasonal attraction, the Park of Gardens combines gardening themes with experiences of nature and culture.

Boat trips and trails

The boating season on the Zwischenahner Meer runs from 1 April to 15 October. The Weisse Flotte operates daily boat trips from April to October. A trip from the Bad Zwischenahn landing stage and back takes about 70 minutes. Passengers can break their journey at Dreibergen or Rostrup and board again later. This gives you the choice of a continuous round trip or one with a stop along the way. Timetables may change, so check the latest times before travelling.

There is also a choice of cycling routes: eight begin in Bad Zwischenahn or pass through the town. A guided moorland tour explores the history of the moor and takes you past the restoration basins, the Moorland Earth Station and the site where a bog body was found. If you would like to include this tour in your plans, check its current availability in advance.

Moorland and regional cuisine

The moorland tour focuses on nature and history. By contrast, the culinary walk “So schmeckt Bad Zwischenahn” (“The Taste of Bad Zwischenahn”) pairs regional specialities with tastings at seven stops. Dates and booking options vary over time, so check the latest information before adding the walk to your plans.

These activities offer different starting points for choosing a stay in Bad Zwischenahn: mill history and church art, seasonal garden displays, time on the water or guided experiences centred on the moorland and regional cuisine. The boat trip has an approximate stated duration; for tours and walks, be sure to check their respective dates and availability.
