Wölfersheim can be explored through two themes: the history of the town and the paths around Wölfersheim Lake. This offers different focuses for a stay, from distinctive buildings to circular routes and running trails. If you are weighing up several options, you can decide in advance whether local history, exercise, or the combination of landscape and mining history will be the deciding factor.

Local History and Architecture

The White Tower is the landmark of the Wölfersheim district. The 27-meter-high round tower has a stone spire and a battlement walk. It was the largest structure in the town’s fortifications, which were completed with its construction in 1408. It therefore represents a specific part of local history and defines the district’s appearance as a distinctive landmark.

The Evangelical Reformed Church of Wölfersheim also makes an architectural statement: it is one of Germany’s largest Baroque hall churches. The Wölfersheim Energy Museum explores a different historical arc, bridging energy generation from lignite and renewable energy. Together, the tower, church, and museum offer different points of entry if you are interested in architectural history and changes in energy supply.

Circular Routes and Activities by the Lake

The Singberg Experience Trail is a family-friendly circular route about 3.5 kilometers long. It passes through orchards, a small forest, and a ravine. Interactive stations combine activities and obstacles with information about animals and plants. This gives the trail a different focus from the routes by the lake: nature and participation take center stage here.

At Wölfersheim Lake, a historic circular trail introduces visitors to the municipality’s mining history through information boards at eight stops. The Historical Lakeside Trail also covers how the lake was formed, as well as the mining and power station history of the area. QR codes supplement the boards with content such as an audio guide and video footage. The trail is largely accessible, but there is currently no accessible toilet there. If this is important for your plans, take it into account before your visit.

The paths around Wölfersheim Lake are suitable for running. Suggested routes include a circular trail of about 3.5 kilometers, as well as 5-, 10-, and 20-kilometer options. This lets you factor your preferred running distance into your plans without confusing the running routes with the interactive family trail: the two offerings differ in length and focus.

Two long-distance routes are also connected to Wölfersheim. The Luther Trail 1521 between Worms and Wartburg Castle runs from Hungen via Wölfersheim to Friedberg. The Limes Cycle Route follows the Limes past Wölfersheim. The Red Lama Soccer Golf Resort by the lake is also open to individuals and groups, by prior arrangement, for soccer golf, fun, and team building. Plan ahead and make an advance reservation, and check current availability.

The Lake, Landscape, and Travel Planning

At 37 hectares, Wölfersheim Lake is the largest lake in the Wetterau lake district. It was created by lignite open-pit mining; lignite was mined here in the first half of the last century. The lake therefore combines an experience of the landscape with the history of energy generation, which is also explored at the Energy Museum. The circular trail and the museum offer different ways to engage with this subject: one follows the history of the site, while the other looks at the shift from lignite to renewable energy.

The municipality of Wölfersheim has about 10,000 residents and is located right by the A 45. You can then compare hotels to suit your own travel plans. This keeps your choices focused on the interests that are actually bringing you to Wölfersheim.
