Ortenberg can be explored through several distinct themes: its historic center, the music collection in Lißberg and the natural areas along the Nidder. There are also signposted trails through the low mountain landscape and the traditional Kalter Markt. When planning your trip, it is worth keeping these highlights separate: some attractions are in the town center, while others are in the districts or their immediate surroundings.

Local history and the old town

Ortenberg is first referred to as a town in the 13th century. The town ramparts, which enclose the historic center with its many half-timbered buildings, date from this period. St. Mary’s Church offers another glimpse into the town’s history: the three-aisled church houses one of the oldest choir stalls in Hesse. It is also home to a copy of the notable Ortenberg Altarpiece from the 15th century.

Guided tours also take in the old town. One of the walking tours of Ortenberg follows the Ortenberg Lantern Trail. If you would like to include this in your plans, check the current dates in advance.

Instruments in Lißberg

The Lißberg Musical Instrument Museum houses more than 2,000 original instruments and replicas. The museum also has the world’s largest collection of hurdy-gurdies and bagpipes. The focus is therefore not only on the number of instruments, but also on a clearly defined area of specialization.

There is more to a visit than viewing the exhibits: you can try out instruments at a music table. Cassettes or CDs provide an additional audio dimension to the exhibition. This combination of a collection, hands-on experience and audio examples makes Lißberg a distinctive highlight among the things to discover in Ortenberg.

The Nidder floodplain and experiencing nature

The house at the NABU Ortenberg salt meadows, along with its nature-friendly outdoor grounds, is situated in the Nidder floodplain, characterized by species-rich meadows. A section of the river directly behind the house has been renaturalized. It provides a habitat for kingfishers, dragonfly species and brown trout; beavers also visit the Nidder regularly. Naturally, you may not see them on every visit.

There are several ways to explore nature around the house: with a dip net in the renaturalized Nidder, a magnifying glass in the flower meadow and in the snack garden. The Selters Salt Meadows and Vineyard nature reserve is also close by. Salt-loving plants such as three-pronged seablite and strawberry clover grow there. The protected area and the river floodplain offer different highlights: here, distinctive plants shape the landscape; there, the focus is on river habitats and species-rich meadows.

Cycling and hiking

The Vulkanradweg cycling trail runs directly through Ortenberg’s town center and through the districts of Lißberg, Eckartsborn and Selters. The Ortenberg recreational area has signposted trails for hiking through the surrounding low mountain landscape. The Bonifatius Route is different: it skirts the municipality and is of particular interest to hikers. When identifying the routes, therefore, do not assume that the Bonifatius Route passes through the town center.

The trails offer different ways to explore the area: the Vulkanradweg passes through the places mentioned above, while the hiking trails lead into the low mountain landscape. For planning your trip, these specific route details are more helpful than assuming that all the trails form one shared circuit.

Kalter Markt in late October

A special recurring event is the Kalter Markt. It has been celebrated every year in late October since the 13th century and is considered the largest folk festival in Upper Hesse. The market includes a centuries-old horse and foal market as well as a large general goods market with more than 400 stalls. The event thus brings together several types of market and a long-standing tradition.

If the Kalter Markt is the reason for your trip, check that year’s program in advance. The recurring late-October date gives you the usual timeframe; check the specific events separately when planning your trip.
