A stay in Grebendorf can be explored from two distinctive angles: the historic village center and the recreation area at Meinhard Lake. In the village, half-timbered houses, a circular green and the church form part of the townscape; in the lakeside area, paths, water sports and other recreational activities take center stage. You can weigh up architectural history and time by the water as different focuses for your trip—or include both in your plans.

Village Center and Architectural History

The historic village center includes many restored half-timbered houses, the Old Keudell Castle from the 17th century, a circular green and a church. One particularly precise historical marker is the house at KirchstraĂźe 2: dating from 1593, it is among the oldest surviving residential buildings in the Werra-MeiĂźner district. Its construction date adds a precisely dated story of a residential building to the broader picture of the village center.

The present-day church was built to plans by ecclesiastical architect Johann Friedrich Matthei and consecrated in 1821. On its west side, it preserves remnants of a former tower from the 15th century; in 1843, the tower was raised to its current height. Different periods of history come together here: the remains of the former tower, the consecration of the present-day church and the later raising of the tower.

Nature, Hiking and Meinhard Lake

Grebendorf borders the forests and highlands of the Meinhard directly, offering easy access to nature. Valley and floodplain hikes are possible in Grebendorf and the Werra Valley. The Meinhard Lake area lies between Grebendorf and Jestädt and covers around 500,000 square meters. Walking and cycling routes are available around the lakes.

Swimming, fishing, camping and water sports are available at Meinhard Lake; there are dining options at the lakeside terrace. A water slide and pedal-boat rental round out the facilities. Check their seasonal availability before your trip. The Werra Valley Cycle Path passes directly by the Meinhard Lake area in Meinhard-Grebendorf.

Compare Cycling and Hiking Tours

The 33 km Castle Cycling Loop connects castles and smaller manor houses, including some in Grebendorf. It runs along both banks of the Werra with almost no climbs and is family-friendly. This gives it a different cycling profile from the walks and cycling routes around the lakes: here, the focus is on a longer route and the connections between the castles.

More Options in the Wider Destination of Meinhard

The wider destination of Meinhard offers additional regional options. In Meinhard-Schwebda, marked circular walking routes go around the village. On the eastern shore of Lake Werratalsee lies Seepark Meinhard, with recreational and swimming facilities for the whole family, as well as a varied playground and beach volleyball courts.

Another hiking option is the P4 Hessische Schweiz Premium Trail in Meinhard. It is classified as difficult, is 15.6 kilometers long, has 422 meters of elevation gain and takes an indicated 330 minutes. Comparing it with the 33 km Castle Cycling Loop, which has almost no climbs, highlights their different planning profiles: a family-friendly cycling route along both banks of the Werra and a challenging hike with a specified duration and elevation gain. P4 passes through the Green Belt of Hesse National Natural Monument and reaches steep cliff edges with views of the Werra Valley.
