Harbshausen borders Kellerwald-Edersee National Park; the Himmelsbreite National Park entrance is near Harbshausen. Several trails lead from here to different destinations, including the Hagenstein viewpoint, the Breitenbach Valley and Lake Edersee. When planning, consider both the approximate distance and the route: the H trails differ in whether they lead to Hagenstein, to the lake or to other named sections of trail.

Himmelsbreite and the Trail to Hagenstein

From the Himmelsbreite entrance, a wheelchair-accessible one-way trail leads to the Hagenstein viewpoint, 1.2 km away. Trail conditions may change; check them before your visit. The approximately 5.5 km H 1 trail also leads from Himmelsbreite through the wildlife enclosure to Hagenstein, descends to Kirchlotheim and returns via the Schulpfad. This trail therefore connects the viewpoint with other sections of the route described.

Four H Trails, Different Routes

The approximately 5 km H 3 trail branches off to the left from Himmelsbreite before the wildlife enclosure, runs through the Breitenbach Valley to the lake and returns via the lakeside road. The approximately 7 km H 4 trail follows the Ederseerandstraße in the direction of Asel. At a sand pit, it turns right, runs through the ditch to Bettelkopf and returns.

At approximately 4.5 km, H 5 is the shortest of the four trails described. It follows the Schulpfad to the Ederpfad and returns via the road between Herzhausen and Harbshausen. H 1 and H 3 also differ in their destinations: H 1 leads to Hagenstein and Kirchlotheim, while H 3 runs through the Breitenbach Valley to the lake. At approximately 7 km, H 4 is the longest of the trails mentioned.

Lake Edersee, Alpacas and Group Accommodation

Lake Edersee, near Harbshausen, offers opportunities for swimming and surfing. Water conditions vary by season; if you plan these activities, check the conditions for your visit. H 3 leads to the lake, making its destination different from those of the trails to Hagenstein or Bettelkopf.

Kellerwald Alpakas offers tours exploring the area around Harbshausen by Lake Edersee; the provider is located right by Kellerwald-Edersee National Park. Tour details may change, so check the provider’s current information before making plans.

The Sport-, Natur- und Erlebniscamp Edersee is group accommodation for young people in the Breitenbach Valley, on the shore of Lake Edersee below Harbshausen. Facilities include an indoor climbing wall, canoes, mountain bikes and a large all-weather sports field. Access is intended for groups and organized programs.

The Chapel of Harbshausen

The chapel’s building history also offers a distinct point of reference for the village. It was built in 1570. After the building fell into disrepair, a complete rebuild began in 1720; it was completed in 1721, and the interior was finished in 1726. These dates distinguish the original building from its later reconstruction.
