The 3.5-kilometre Lengefeld Family Adventure Trail begins at the Forsthaus Lengefeld hiking car park. It follows the Marbeck stream and Wipperteich pond, and passes through the beech forest on Wipper Berg. The route is manageable for families with kindergarten-age children, but is not suitable for pushchairs. Trail facilities include a discovery point, seven activity stations, three play areas and a rest area.

Exploring the Family Adventure Trail

The activities cover topics such as water, forests, soils and rocks, as well as wildlife in streams and forests. The trail is designed for interactive learning and outdoor play. This means the route combines exercise with opportunities to explore and play, rather than simply providing a path to follow. If you’d like to take a break along the way, there is a rest area on the trail.

The trail was created in spring 2024. Trail infrastructure may be maintained or changed, so check its current condition before your visit. The medieval Hünenkeller is also right next to the Family Adventure Trail and can be reached via a short detour. This lets you add a historical point of interest to your hike.

Hiking, cycling and winter activities in Lengefeld

Lengefeld is in Diemelsee Nature Park and has marked hiking and cycling routes. In addition to the Family Adventure Trail, these offer more ways to get around on foot or by bike. The adventure trail focuses especially on learning and play, while the marked routes are about the journey itself.

Cross-country ski trails are groomed in winter. This seasonal option depends on the weather and trail maintenance. If cross-country skiing is important to your travel plans, check the current conditions before your visit. The other route options and the groomed ski trails offer different ways to enjoy a stay at different times of year.

Korbach: town history, geology and more trails

The broader destination of Korbach focuses on other topics. The Wolfgang Bonhage Museum Korbach covers the world-famous fossils of the Korbach fissure, the 1,000-year history of the medieval Hanseatic town and evidence of historic gold mining at Eisenberg. This brings the town’s history, geological history and mining into focus.

The 2.1-kilometre “Between the Walls” circular route runs between Korbach’s two medieval town walls, around the historic old town. It is shorter than the Family Adventure Trail in Lengefeld and offers its own historical focus, with ten stations: visitors discover interesting and curious facts about the town’s history and learn about modern aspects of Korbach. The walk begins and ends at the town model by the Wolfgang Bonhage Museum Korbach.

Geology is also explored in different ways in Korbach. The Korbach fissure is a site where Late Permian vertebrates have been found. Alongside the Messel Pit UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is considered Hesse’s most significant palaeontological geological monument and Europe’s oldest known fossil-bearing fissure. At the GeoFoyer Kalkturm Korbach, you can explore the landscape and wildlife of 250 million years ago; rocks from the surrounding area illustrate how this ancient landscape formed.

For cyclists, the broader destination of Korbach offers the Green Trails at Eisenberg near Korbach-Goldhausen: the ten kilometres of singletrack have been complete since summer 2023 and are linked into four routes of varying difficulty. The Goldspur Korbach offers another way to explore mining history, with gold coins set into the ground leading to sights in the medieval town. Evidence of mining can be seen above ground along the educational trail, while further evidence lies underground in the Eisenberg Visitor Mine.
