Bad Arolsen is described as a Baroque town on the shores of Lake Twistesee. The palace’s history, museums and paths offer different ways to discover the town. You can focus on architectural history and sculpture, or explore guided tours, avenues and activities by the lake. This lets you tailor your trip to the subjects that interest you most.

Palace History and Town Tours

Arolsen Residential Palace is considered the town’s landmark. It was built in the Baroque style between 1710 and 1810. The history of the palace grounds goes back further: they were once home to an Augustinian monastery, first mentioned in 1131. These different periods give the palace complex a historical context that extends beyond the time when it was built.

Guided town tours cover Baroque splendor, historic sites and anecdotes. If you would rather explore Bad Arolsen by completing tasks, a city game takes you through the Baroque center, where you solve challenges. For both options, it is a good idea to check dates and availability before your trip. When planning, you can choose between a guided introduction and an independent exploration with tasks.

Christian Daniel Rauch and Sculpture

The C. D. Rauch Birthplace is in the former chamberlain’s house, where Christian Daniel Rauch was born on January 2, 1777. Drawings there explain how sculptures are made. The focus is therefore not only on the finished work, but also on the creative process.

The Christian Daniel Rauch Museum displays Rauch’s original works, 19th-century sculptures and material on the development of Neoclassical sculpture. It is housed in the Baroque stables of the Residential Palace. These were built between 1749 and 1758; the museum’s address is Schloßstraße 30 in Bad Arolsen. The birthplace and museum offer different perspectives: one focuses on Rauch’s life and drawings that reveal how sculptures are made, while the other centers on original works, 19th-century sculptures and the development of a style.

Avenues, Lake Twistesee and Outdoor Activities

Bad Arolsen’s Baroque avenues are ideal for walking and cycling. A named route, “Twiste Reservoir–Twistesee Beach,” starts in Bad Arolsen.

A nine-hole golf course and the MacBirdies adventure golf course are located above Lake Twistesee. If you plan to visit either course, check access and facilities before your trip. Alongside cultural attractions, golf and adventure golf are also options for your stay. You can start by sorting the different activities according to your interests: local history and museums, exercise along the avenues, or golf above the lake.

Waldeck-Frankenberg as a Wider Destination

Those looking beyond Bad Arolsen to the wider Waldeck-Frankenberg destination will find more nature and culture to explore. The ancient beech forests of Kellerwald-Edersee National Park have been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2011. The Urwaldsteig Edersee trail is 66 kilometers long and can be hiked in eight stages or as part of a three-day ranger-led hike; each stage of the ranger hike is listed as around 22 kilometers. The two options differ in how the route is divided and in the stated duration. They offer an additional point of reference if your travel plans also include hiking in the wider Waldeck-Frankenberg destination.
