Romrod Castle is a defining feature of the townscape and the town’s landmark. When planning your trip, you can choose between a short digital tour, longer circuits and a long-distance route.
Romrod Castle and the City Tour
The virtual doyo city tour starts at the Karl Follen memorial plaque in Romrod. The interactive tour includes five stops, covers around 500 metres and takes about an hour. The tour is free and does not require registration; once downloaded, the audio tour can be used offline. Alongside the castle as the town’s defining landmark, this offers a compact tour of the town.
Circular Routes and the Luther Trail
The Around Romrod Tour is a circular route of around 20 kilometres that you can travel on foot or by bike. You can start in any district. The Romrod Ponds Route is a 30-kilometre circuit around Romrod; its many ponds invite you to linger. The two routes offer different experiences: on the first, you can choose between hiking and cycling, while the second focuses on the ponds.
The Luther Trail 1521 is on a different scale: this 320-kilometre route runs through Hesse, the Vogelsberg and the small town of Romrod. It is therefore a long-distance route, not another circuit around the town. When planning your routes, it is advisable to check current conditions before setting out.
A Nearby Destination
Mehlbach Pond lies outside Romrod, in the GemĂĽnden/Felda district. It is a destination for hikers and cyclists exploring the area around Zell, a district of Romrod. The forest lake is a legally protected biotope, surrounded by mixed and coniferous woodland, and can be circumnavigated on foot. Here, a short walk around the lake combines with views of a protected biotope; the excursion takes you into the GemĂĽnden/Felda district, not Romrod itself.
The Vogelsberg as a Destination in Its Own Right
The Vogelsberg is Europe’s largest volcanic region. The Vogelsberg mountain hay meadows are considered the largest protected areas of their kind in Hesse. In Schotten, the interactive Vulkanium explains volcanism; its multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg. Hands-on stations and interactive exhibits let visitors experience the past first-hand.
The Vogelsberg also has destinations for those interested in routes: the GipfelTour Schotten covers 14 kilometres and four peaks in the Oberwald, passing through species-rich mountain meadows and varied woodland with primeval basalt formations. Since 2001, the Vogelsberggarten on the Schlossberg hill in Ulrichstein has been cultivated and maintained around the castle ruins using traditional farming methods, preserving centuries-old cultural heritage. Visitors can discover 243 wild plant species there.
