Hiking trails with a combined length of more than 100 km extend around the 15 volcanic villages of the 92 km² municipality of Grebenhain. The Vulkanring and the Bonifatius Route pass through all 15 villages. Together with the local trails, they offer a choice of routes linking the whole municipality and tours with specific waypoints.

Hiking Trails and Cultural Sites

The Kleekopf Trail runs around Grebenhain and passes Katzenteich pond and the Oberwald barbecue area. The WeiĂźer Stein Trail loops around Bermuthshain and passes a viewpoint and a former ski jump below the WeiĂźer Stein. The two route descriptions therefore differ both in where their loops begin and in the named sights along the way: Katzenteich pond and the barbecue area near Grebenhain, and a viewpoint and former ski jump near Bermuthshain.

The Grebenhain Historical Circular Hiking Trail links notable cultural monuments in four typical Vogelsberg villages within the municipality. Another place to discover along the hiking trails is the historic dance site in Grebenhain. The named site and a route featuring cultural monuments in several villages thus offer different cultural and historical points of interest.

For interested groups, such as clubs and school classes, the Förderverein MUNA-Museum Grebenhain e. V. offers guided walks and tours of the grounds of the former Hartmannshain air ammunition depot throughout the year. Tours must be booked by prior arrangement. If you would like to include this in your plans, arrange the tour with the association in advance.

Cycling Through the Municipality

When it comes to cycling routes, their course and endpoint are useful guides: the Vulkanradweg runs through the middle of the municipality of Grebenhain, while the SĂĽdbahnradweg ends in the district of Hartmannshain. Along the Vulkanradweg between Schlitz and Grebenhain/Hartmannshain, 16 listening points share stories and little-known facts about the Vogelsberg volcanic region. They are part of a GPS-guided audio tour that combines cycling with narrated content along this stretch of the route. As app availability can change, it is advisable to check in advance whether the audio tour is currently available.

Winter Activities and Seasonal Opening

In winter, the Herchenhainer Höhenweg has a ski slope with a lift and groomed cross-country ski trails. Grebenhain also has access points to an extensive cross-country ski trail network in winter. This means that a ski slope and trails at a specific location on the Höhenweg are complemented by a municipality-wide cross-country network. Winter conditions and trail availability vary by season; check the current situation before setting out.

The Ilbeshausen-Hochwaldhausen family swimming pool is located in the state-approved climatic health resort of Ilbeshausen-Hochwaldhausen, near the spa park. It is open seasonally. It is therefore a good idea to check the current opening days in advance when planning a visit.

Vogelsberg as a Regional Destination

Volcanism is a destination in its own right in the wider Vogelsberg region: the Vogelsberg is Europe's largest volcanic area. In Schotten, the interactive Vulkaneum explains volcanism in an engaging way; its multimedia exhibition explores volcanism and geology in the Vogelsberg. Visitors can experience the past firsthand at various hands-on stations and interactive exhibits.
