Groß-Felda combines hiking with specific themes from local history. The panoramic hiking trail, two old mills, and the area’s history of nail smithing offer different perspectives on the town. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether to focus on route planning or on historic buildings and traditional crafts.

Panoramic Hiking in Groß-Felda and Feldatal

The 18 km panoramic hiking trail starts and ends at the town hall in Groß-Felda. It passes through Trockenau, several districts of Feldatal, and various viewpoints. Since the start and finish are at the same place, the route can be classified as a circular hike; the named stops also give it a specific course. Conditions on individual sections of the trail may change, so check them before setting out.

In the wider Feldatal destination, Panorama Trail 2 is another hiking option. It is 14 km long and runs at an altitude of 287 to 415 m. The elevation difference is 128 m, with a total of 278 m of ascent and descent. This makes Panorama Trail 2 four kilometers shorter than the 18 km loop in Groß-Felda, while its elevation figures provide an additional point of comparison. The panoramic hiking trails through the Feldatal are listed as permanent hiking trails by the German Volkssport Association (DVV). There are also circular hiking trails in Feldatal.

Mills and the History of Nail Smithing

Heiligenmühle is an ancient mill in the direction of Schellnhausen. It has an overshot waterwheel located inside the building and a grinding mechanism. “Overshot” describes a design in which water is directed onto the wheel from above; a grinding mechanism is the equipment used for milling. These terms illustrate different technical aspects of the mill: the wheel’s drive and the grinding process.

Hohenmühle is in the center of Groß-Felda and is also an ancient mill. After milling operations ceased, it was converted into a residential building. The two mills therefore highlight different aspects: Heiligenmühle centers on its waterwheel and grinding mechanism, while Hohenmühle tells the story of a later change of use. Local history thus encompasses both the technical features of mills and the transformation of a mill building.

Until shortly before the First World War, Groß-Felda had around 30 nail smithies. This time reference places the approximate number in the context of local history. Alongside the mills, nail smithing represents a distinct aspect of Groß-Felda’s former crafts.

Focus Areas for Your Stay

The hiking and history themes address different questions when planning a trip. The loop starting at the town hall offers a fixed start and finish; Panorama Trail 2 can also be considered in terms of its elevation figures. The mills differ in their architectural features and Hohenmühle’s later use, while the nail smithies represent a distinct historical trade. Choose your focus based on whether you would like to center your trip on the hiking trails or the local history of crafts and mills.
