Those choosing Schwarzenborn for a trip can explore its natural surroundings and local history at specific sites: the “Hoher Knüll” Fabelweg offers a longer hike, while the footbath, a house with a historical name and the Landfrauen Café highlight other themes.

Hiking and Views

The “Hoher Knüll” Fabelweg is 8.92 kilometres long and forms a circular route. It starts and ends at the hikers’ car park below the August-Franke Tower. Along the way, it passes through quiet forests, open countryside and stream valleys. The overview in the Naturpark Knüll brochure shows it as Premium Hiking Trail 9, “Hoher Knüll”. Check the current trail conditions before setting out, as they may change.

The August-Franke Tower, also known as the “Knüll Tower on Knüllköpfchen”, is in the area around Schwarzenborn. From there, you can enjoy views over Schwarzenborn and the surrounding area. The hike and the view from the tower are therefore two separate points to consider when planning your visit. If you plan to visit the tower, check its current accessibility in advance.

Local History and Regular Events

In June 2021, an arm bath was added to the footbath in Schwarzenborn, providing a refreshing soak for the arms as well. Please check locally whether the footbath is currently in operation. The Landfrauen in Schwarzenborn hold a “Landfrauen Café” at regular intervals. Since the dates are important for planning, please check the latest schedule in advance.

Haus Hebebrand also offers a historical note: Valentin Schröder acquired the house, which is also known as “Goethe’s ancestral home”. This named historic building adds to the area’s natural and hiking attractions.

The Wider Region: Schwalm-Eder District

Beyond Schwarzenborn, the Schwalm-Eder district includes the upland landscapes around Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald. One example of the district’s cultural attractions is the Malerstübchen Museum in Willingshausen. It explores 19th- and 20th-century art history and displays paintings featuring Schwalm traditional dress, as well as local rural crafts, including whitework embroidery, knitting and spinning. Guided by an expert, visitors can attend talks about the artists’ colony and its artists, Schwalm customs and traditional crafts.

The Museum der Schwalm in Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain has a different focus: a reconstructed pottery workshop showcases the ceramics and pottery traditionally made in the region. A large model of Ziegenhain water fortress also illustrates what it looked like in 1761, after it was shelled during the Seven Years’ War.

For a longer cycling trip, the Schwalm Cycle Route, at around 100 kilometres, is a different proposition from the 8.92-kilometre Fabelweg. It runs mainly along paved or surfaced paths through river landscapes with meadows, fields, villages and half-timbered towns, continuing to the Schwalm’s confluence with the Eder shortly before Felsberg. Felsberg-Gensungen and Schwalmstadt-Treysa are listed as railway connections for reaching the cycle route. Check the latest timetables before travelling.
