Jesberg combines historical themes with practical opportunities for exercise and leisure. The Princess Garden, events on the castle grounds, facilities at the leisure center and a hike connected with Densberg each offer a different focus. You can plan your trip around whether you are mainly interested in history, outdoor activities or both.

Garden, SchloĂźberg and Events

SchloĂźberg in Jesberg has a festival ground, a newly built music pavilion, a circular hiking trail, a parking lot and restroom facilities.

Events are held annually on the new castle grounds. The program includes Castle Day, various concerts, the Wine Festival and the castle flea market. If you want to plan your trip around an event, check the dates in advance; the fact that these events are held annually does not specify a particular date.

The Princess Garden lies southeast of Jesberg, in what is now Jesberg State Forest. It was created between 1723 and 1753 at the request of Maximilian’s four daughters: Friederike (1722–1787), Charlotte (1725–1782), Wilhelmine (1726–1808) and Karoline (1732–1759). The extended period of its creation and the reason behind it give the garden its own historical significance. Along with events on the castle grounds, it offers a different way to explore Jesberg’s history than a focus on today’s leisure activities.

Leisure and Exercise

The leisure center near the campground has soccer, basketball and tennis courts, a beach volleyball court, a modern adventure playground, and a bocce and boules court.

The Ninja Warrior course is also part of the leisure center. It opened on October 14, 2023; on the 32-meter-long course, visitors can test their agility and strength at eight stations. The skate park consists of five different elements, two of which have additional safety bars. The two facilities therefore have different features: the course focuses on its route and stations, while the skate park focuses on its individual elements. Check the current access conditions for the leisure facilities before your visit.

Hike Connected with Densberg

A described hiking route starts at the “Gilsatal” hiking parking lot near the Jesberg leisure center and goes over the Hemberg, a ridge in the Gilserberg Heights, down toward Densberg to the Gilsa River, and back to Jesberg. The route thus connects a starting point near the leisure center with a trail that also takes in Densberg and the Gilsa; it does not lie entirely within Jesberg. Check local trail conditions before setting out, and plan your hike based on the actual route.

Local Shopping and a Look at the District

The local Edeka supermarket in Jesberg offers regional and seasonal products from local farmers and producers. Since the range of products at retailers may change, check the current selection if you are looking for a specific item.

The Schwalm-Eder district includes upland landscapes around the Knüll, Kellerwald and Habichtswald ranges. At the district level, there are also cultural attractions in other locations. The Malerstübchen Museum in Willingshausen explores 19th- and 20th-century art history and displays paintings featuring traditional Schwalm costumes. It also presents traditional rural Schwalm crafts, including whitework embroidery, knitting and spinning. Expert-led tours include talks about the artists’ colony and its artists, Schwalm customs, handicrafts and whitework embroidery.

In Schwalmstadt-Ziegenhain, the Museum der Schwalm displays the region’s traditional ceramics and pottery in a reconstructed pottery workshop. The museum also features a large model of the Ziegenhain water fortress, showing its condition in 1761 after the bombardment during the Seven Years’ War. These places and themes are part of the broader Schwalm-Eder district destination and should be distinguished from the attractions in Jesberg.

When looking for a hotel in Jesberg, you can start by choosing your focus: historic sites and events, leisure activities or outdoor exercise.
