Großropperhausen brings together half-timbered houses, a historic manor house and hiking trails in the wooded heights of the Knüll. When planning your visit, it is worth considering the landscape and historical points of interest separately: one trail crosses open fields and follows the edges of the forest, while the history of the village can be seen in its buildings, gardens and individual places of remembrance.

Forest landscape and hiking trail

Numerous half-timbered houses shape the appearance of Großropperhausen. The “Ohetal bei Großropperhausen” nature reserve covers 65.7 hectares and extends across the districts of Großropperhausen and Spießkappel. The Wunderbares Waldbad hiking trail begins in Großropperhausen and crosses open fields as well as following the edges of the forest. Along the way, it offers expansive views, bodies of water and short stretches through the woods. Check trail conditions and possible diversions before setting out.

Manor house, garden and chapel

The Großropperhausen manor complex consists of six buildings and three outbuildings. The associated estate was renovated and fortified between 1706 and 1724, replacing the old castle. The walled Baroque garden is also part of the historic setting: it was part of a former, generously landscaped park. A Celtic cross stands in front of the manor chapel. Its base is made of Irish bluestone, and the cross itself of local limestone.

Historic sites in the village

Historic sights include the remains of a medieval castle, the Jewish cemetery on the edge of the village and the former synagogue, which is now a private home. The cemetery lies about 200 metres north of the built-up area of Großropperhausen, above the village at the edge of the forest, and covers 1,032 square metres. For directions: a farm track branches off to the left at the beginning of Kirchberg Street, by house number 3, and leads to the cemetery.

Art and craft courtyard

Private guided tours for groups can be booked at the art and craft courtyard with its sculpture garden. Confirm availability with the nature park or the provider. Once a year, the courtyard opens its studios to the wider public; a cultural programme for the day is planned. Ask the provider for current dates. Since 2007, the art and craft courtyard has offered three five-day chainsaw courses each year. If a course is important to your trip, check the current dates as well.

Seasonal outdoor swimming pool

The heated Großropperhausen outdoor swimming pool has just under 600 square metres of water, including a children’s paddling pool. It operates seasonally; check current opening times and facilities before visiting.

More highlights in Frielendorf

The wider destination of Frielendorf also has its own landscapes and cultural attractions. The Silbersee in Frielendorf covers 8.2 hectares and is 14 metres deep at its deepest point. It was created by open-cast lignite mining in the 1980s and subsequently flooded with groundwater. The Frielendorf Museum Shop recreates a rural village shop from the early 20th century using historic furnishings from old shops in Frielendorf. Check visiting hours there separately.
