The old bakehouse plays two roles in Wenzigerode: it is one of the featured historic buildings and is fired up by local associations for the traditional “Fountain and Bakehouse Festival.” Haus Ebersberg and the village church are also part of this selection. The trails offer different highlights, too: the northern route of the Way of St. James leads towards the church, while the Treisberg Circular Trail 1 offers a view of it on the return route. This gives you specific themes for a stay, from architectural history and community life to hiking and art along the way.

Historic Buildings and Village History

The architectural history is especially tangible at Haus Ebersberg in Bad Zwesten-Wenzigerode: this lovingly restored cultural monument is designed in the Art Nouveau style and first opened its doors in 1908. It adds a named example of Art Nouveau to the selection of historic buildings; the bakehouse and village church are included, too.

Walking Trails with Different Highlights

The northern route of the Way of St. James leads from Schnitzer Eiche towards the church in Wenzigerode. A brochure for the Way of St. James is also available, with route descriptions, trail maps and information about church opening hours. It can be obtained for a nominal fee of €1 from the Tourist Information Office in Bad Zwesten Town Hall and from the churches.

Treisberg Circular Trail 1 follows the Kellerwaldsteig and continues towards Wenzigerode. On the return route, it runs along the edge of the forest and offers a view of the church in Wenzigerode. The trail description thus combines a specific direction with a landscape view and one of the featured historic buildings. The Treisberg Circular Trail also features artworks by ARS NATURA, intended to create a dialogue between nature and art.

Another named section is the “ARS NATURA Circular Trail X 8a”: it is about 12 kilometres long and includes ten artworks. The approximate route length and number of artworks provide two specific points of reference for planning this section, without specifying a walking time.

Festivals and Practical Information

The Wenzigerode shooting club invites everyone to its “Open Shooting Competition” annually in early October; the exact date may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, it is best to check the specific date. At the traditional “Fountain and Bakehouse Festival,” local associations fire up the old bakehouse, and the village fills with the aroma of freshly baked bread. While a seasonal time frame is given for the shooting competition, the bakehouse tradition and bread are at the heart of the bakehouse festival.

More Things to Do in the Wider Bad Zwesten Destination

In the wider Bad Zwesten destination, the certified Bad Zwesten Nordic Walking Park has three trails of varying difficulty, measuring 4.4 km, 8.8 km and 12.5 km. Each trail starts and finishes in the spa gardens by the spa centre. The distances and difficulty levels provide two specific points of reference when choosing a trail. As trail conditions may change, it is advisable to check for updates before setting out.

The Löwenstein Castle ruins are also in the wider Bad Zwesten destination. Its former 26-metre-high defensive tower can be climbed via a total of 82 steps and offers views across Bad Zwesten, the Urff Valley, the Löwensteiner Grund, the Schwalmpforte and as far as the Knüll Mountains. Alongside Wenzigerode’s trails and cultural attractions, this offers another destination with a clearly specified climb and named viewpoints.
