The Siegfried Cycle Route reaches Hüttenthal through the Marbach Valley; Hüttenthal is also a starting point for the Nibelungensteig trail. For choosing where to stay, this means two different connections to routes: cycling on a route that reaches the village, and hiking with Hüttenthal as a starting point. Other highlights include the “Triumphalis” circular hiking trail, regional stories and insights into food production.
Cycling and hiking in Hüttenthal
The Siegfried Cycle Route reaches Hüttenthal and Hilterklingen; before Grasellenbach, it has its only uphill section. Check current route conditions before setting out. This keeps your route planning tied to the actual course without assuming a particular journey time or level of difficulty.
There are two different connections to the village for hikers. Hüttenthal is a starting point for the Nibelungensteig, which passes the Marbach Reservoir. The “Triumphalis” circular hiking trail, by contrast, starts at the Mossautalhalle in Hüttenthal and takes a wide loop around the Hüttenthal district of Güttersbach. In Mossautal, it leads to the Rotes Wasser nature reserve, considered the Odenwald’s only moor. Its named starting point and described loop give the Triumphalis a different character from the Nibelungensteig starting point.
Fountains, history and local products
Near the destination, the “Fafnir” circular trail leads to the Lindelbrunnen. It is claimed to be Siegfried’s spring and is associated with the Nibelung legend. The Lindelbrunnen was first mentioned in 773 in a boundary description of the Mark of Heppenheim; in 1884, the Odenwaldklub renovated it. Its tentative connection to the legend and the two historical dates offer different points of interest for a visit: tradition on the one hand, documented references on the other.
Food production is also among the local and regional topics. At the Hüttenthal ice cream manufactory, visitors may be lucky enough to watch the ice cream being made through a window. In Mossautal, the Hüttenthal private dairy offers guests the opportunity to visit. Since 1997, Odenwälder Frühstückskäse has carried the “protected designation of origin” seal. These examples offer different highlights: a possible glimpse of ice cream production, a visit to the dairy and a cheese’s designation of origin.
Mossautal: landscape and more things to do
As a wider travel area, Mossautal provides a distinct setting for planning. Three long valleys, flowering meadows, and extensive beech and mixed forests shape the landscape of Mossautal. This description refers to the travel area as a whole, not just Hüttenthal.
There are various mountain biking trails and opportunities for horse riding in Mossautal and the surrounding area. Other activities include a family outdoor pool, as well as boating and fishing at the Marbach Reservoir. Güttersbach outdoor pool has a children’s paddling pool with a water mushroom, a beach volleyball court, a boules court and a table tennis table. These options broaden the picture of Mossautal without equating them with the route starting points in Hüttenthal.
Other destinations in the travel area also offer specific activities: a beer tasting is part of the Schmucker brewery tour in Ober-Mossau. When weighing up different interests for a stay, you can distinguish between routes and destinations in Hüttenthal and the additional options in Mossautal.
