In Katzenbach, hiking trails, a spring above the village and a connection to history take centre stage. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a hiking-focused stay, the different trail features offer practical guidance: a circular route with stages, a forest path and a stretch through a valley with a stream crossing.

Choose a hiking trail by route type

The Lahnhöhentour is a circular hiking route that can easily be walked in two stages. The views near Katzenbach are a particular highlight. The combination of a circular route and the option to divide it into stages helps you choose a tour to suit your preferred way of walking.

The Jubiläumsweg Eckelshausen reaches Katzenbach from the Landgrafenbuche via a forest path. The Lahnwanderweg descends into the Katzenbachtal and crosses the Katzenbach stream there. The trails therefore differ in their named features: on the Jubiläumsweg, the Landgrafenbuche and forest path are the points of reference; on the Lahnwanderweg, it is the route through the valley and the stream crossing. This makes it easier to narrow down your options by trail type and landscape.

The excursion restaurant “Der Katzenbacher” is right on the Jubiläumsweg and makes a convenient stop along the way. Check its opening hours before visiting.

Spring, access and local history

The Katzenbach spring lies about 300 metres above the village and can be explored via hiking trails. Alongside the views on the Lahnhöhentour, which are a highlight near Katzenbach, it adds a specific natural attraction to your plans. If you are looking for a named destination rather than a route, you can make the spring a focus of your hiking plans.

One practical detail is the access road: Katzenbach can only be reached via a cul-de-sac from Kombach. Bear this in mind when choosing the village as your base and planning your journey.

The village’s history can also be placed in context. Katzenbach was first mentioned in 1456 in connection with a landgrave’s estate. The village is also associated with the former Baroque hunting lodge of the Landgraves of Darmstadt, built in 1661. Nothing of it remains today. An early mention and a later building thus mark two distinct points in its history.

Biedenkopf: Architectural and regional history

The wider destination of Biedenkopf has a distinct focus on architectural and regional history. Landgrafenschloss Biedenkopf was built in the mid-15th century by Heinrich III of Hesse-Marburg and is one of the significant cultural monuments of the state of Hesse. The castle houses the Hinterlandmuseum, founded in 1908 as a regional museum. Its themes range from the history of industry, transport, agriculture and crafts to traditional dress, housing and everyday culture. This lets you combine architectural history with a broad look at the culture and daily life of the Hinterland region.

An architectural history tour leads through the entire Landgrafenschloss and explains the building’s distinctive features. If you plan to take the tour, check the current visitor arrangements in advance.
