Weilburg brings together Baroque architecture, contemporary art and distinctive natural attractions. The city offers several options for planning your trip: focus on the palace and old town, choose a guided tour, or explore places such as the wildlife park and the crystal cave.

Baroque architecture and art in the former brewery

Weilburg Palace is one of Hesse’s most significant Baroque palace complexes. The complex includes the Protestant Palace Church, a monumental Baroque building. It was built from 1707 to 1713 under Count Johann Ernst, based on plans by Julius Ludwig Rottweil. The church’s history can thus be traced to specific dates, a patron and an architect; at the same time, it forms part of the larger palace ensemble.

The Rosenhang Museum in Weilburg offers a different way to experience culture. Contemporary art is displayed across four floors of the former August Helbig brewery. The building’s historic use and current art come together in one place. Visitors who want to discover Weilburg through more than its Baroque architecture will find a distinct cultural focus here.

You can also vary how you explore the city: options include classic old-town tours, costumed and theatrical tours, themed city tours on a range of subjects, and guided hikes led by experienced guides. If you prefer to explore independently, modern audio guides at the Mining and City Museum let you discover Weilburg’s history. The museum also brings the historic underground mining of iron ore to life in the original, preserved Tiefen Stollen (Deep Tunnel).

Routes and activities

The Klein Nizza recreation area is located directly on long-distance cycle route R7 and is accessible to visitors with disabilities. This gives you two clear points of reference: its location on the cycle route and its designated accessibility. The Lahn Hiking Trail offers another way to plan active days. It is one of the main tourist routes and connects Weilburg to the Lahntal destination for active tourism.

There are several types of guided tours for exploring the historic old town, from classic walks to themed and theatrical tours. Guided hikes are also available for visitors who want to discover Weilburg on foot. At the Mining and City Museum, the focus is on the underground: the original, preserved Tiefen Stollen conveys the history of iron ore mining, while audio guides let visitors explore Weilburg’s history independently. The main difference between these options is whether you prefer a guided tour, a hike or a museum visit.

Wildlife park and crystal cave

At the Tiergarten wildlife park in Weilburg-Hirschhausen, visitors can walk through the fallow deer enclosure. There is also a large adventure playground for children. The wildlife park therefore offers two distinct experiences: a walk through the enclosure and a playground specifically designed for children.

The Kubach Crystal Cave in Weilburg-Kubach is a geological attraction. It lies in limestone around 350 million years old and is Germany’s only crystal cave. Its chamber is more than 30 metres high, making it one of the tallest chambers in German show caves. Its dimensions and geological significance give a visit to the cave a different character from the city’s art and history attractions.

A look at the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination

Visitors wishing to explore beyond Weilburg will find other distinct attractions in the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination. The medieval castle in Runkel was first mentioned in 1159. The historic Lahn Bridge there dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn to have been preserved in its original condition. Another highlight is the Selters Water Museum: guided tours visit the 1907 Art Nouveau fountain temple, the room where Selters water was traditionally served as a house drink, and the reception rooms at the Selters spring, which has been known since 1536. Visitors can sample the original Selters water; tours are available by prior arrangement. These examples are part of the wider Limburg-Weilburg destination and are not features of the city of Weilburg itself.
