Laneburg, the coin hoard and Sauerborn offer different ways to explore Löhnberg: local history, a specific archaeological find and a natural mineral spring right beside a long-distance cycle route. There are also trails in the Kallenbach Valley and the option of boating on the Lahn. When planning your stay, you can first decide whether you want to focus on cultural history, outdoor activities or the water.
Laneburg and the coin hoard: two chapters in the town’s history
The history of Laneburg can be told through several milestones. It was first mentioned in a document in 1324; in the 16th and early 17th centuries, it was expanded in the style of a palace. For a short time, it served as a secondary residence of Nassau-Dillenburg. Its first mention, later expansion and function as a residence form a chronological sequence that gives the castle more than just a single historical connection.
The coin hoard is also connected with Laneburg Castle: it was discovered there in 2000 during renovation work. It consists of 2,011 silver coins and is considered a valuable cultural heritage. Since 2010, it has been on permanent display in the business premises of Kreissparkasse Weilburg in Löhnberg. Alongside the building’s history and its role as a residence, this adds a precisely dated discovery and its display as further aspects of local history.
Sauerborn, the cycle route and the view
The natural mineral spring Sauerborn lies right beside the long-distance R7 cycle route. In 2018, it was named Geotope of the Year by the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark. This named site therefore brings together a geological connection and a long-distance cycle route. Trails in the Kallenbach Valley near Löhnberg invite visitors to hike and cycle. Unlike the trails in the valley, which are suitable for both activities, the R7 is the long-distance cycle route running past Sauerborn.
The 18-metre-high Löhnberg observation tower offers another perspective on the landscape. It has four viewing platforms, with views across the entire Lahn and Kallenbach valleys. The platforms and the views on offer set this apart from the trails and Sauerborn: here, the focus is on looking out across both valleys. When planning your visit, you can therefore choose between cycling, hiking and scenic views according to your interests, without having to combine them into a set itinerary.
Buildings, a geopark site and practical information
The Löhnberg multigenerational house is housed in a listed four-sided farmstead built in 1905. Since 2017, the Löhnberg Water Museum has been a Geopark site of the Westerwald-Lahn-Taunus Geopark. The two places have different points of interest: the farmstead’s heritage protection status is tied to a specific period of construction, while the Water Museum’s connection to the Geopark stems from its designation as a Geopark site. Together, these topics complement the history of Laneburg with a more recent building and a lasting institutional status.
Löhnberg has a rail connection. If you are travelling by train, check the current timetable to choose your specific connection. Boating on the Lahn is another activity available in Löhnberg. When choosing accommodation, you can put your own priorities first: Laneburg and the coin hoard represent historical interests, the R7 and Kallenbach Valley are suited to cycling and hiking, and the Lahn offers an activity on the water.
Limburg-Weilburg: more historical highlights
Elsewhere in the wider travel destination of Limburg-Weilburg, you’ll find additional cultural highlights. In Weilburg, the navigable ship tunnel built between 1844 and 1847 is considered Germany’s oldest and longest navigable ship tunnel. Together with the cupola lock at its lower entrance, it forms a unique technical monument. In Runkel, other historic structures take centre stage: the medieval castle was first mentioned in 1159, and the Lahn bridge dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn preserved in its original condition. These regional examples are distinct attractions in Weilburg and Runkel.
