If you are considering Elz as a travel destination, you can explore its local history, cultural highlights, and routes on foot or by bike as distinct themes.

Historic Walk and Guided Tours

The Historic Walk takes you to older preserved buildings in the town center and gives you an impression of what Elz once looked like, with its intact rows of old houses. Its focus is therefore on individual buildings and the historic townscape. For a deeper look at specific topics, the Elz History and Museum Association offers special guided tours by appointment. These include the Baroque altars of the Hadamar School, the Celtic burial ground in Elz Forest, and the exhibitions at Haus Loer.

Art and Local History

The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist has Baroque altars from Limburg Cathedral, as well as works by the Hadamar School, probably by Volk, dating to around 1748. The Haus Loer local history museum presents the history of Elz and many changing exhibitions; the building was restored in 1988/91. In the forecourt of the Elz Backes stand the bronze sculpture “The Singing Girl” and the sculpture “The Waving Girls.” Both symbolize the many facets of local association life and express the village’s musical tradition.

Cycling and Hiking Routes in Elz

Elz has its own signposted network of cycling and hiking routes. The Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R8 follows the Elbbach through Elz; the Nassau-Wäller cycling circuit also passes through Elz and is about 58 km long in total. For planning a bike ride, the R8 route along the Elbbach and the circuit’s total length provide different points of reference. From Malmeneich, a footpath follows the Hasslerbach to the Pfaffenkopf, the earth mound of a lowland castle, in about twenty minutes. Route, total distance, and a specific walking time thus offer different kinds of information to help you choose a path.

More Highlights in the Limburg-Weilburg Destination Area

The wider Limburg-Weilburg destination area offers additional cultural and hiking highlights. The Rosenhang Museum was established in the former August Helbig brewery in Weilburg and presents contemporary art in changing exhibitions across around 2,000 square meters; studios are also available for artists. In Runkel, the medieval castle still shapes the townscape; it was first mentioned in 1159. The historic Lahn Bridge dates from 1448 and is one of the oldest bridges on the Lahn to have been preserved in its original condition. Runkel is also crossed by the Lahn Hiking Trail and the permanent hiking routes “In the Steep Slopes of the Lahn” and “Through the Kerkerbach Valley.”

The 2024 district brochure describes canoe trips offered by the Runkel canoe station for individual travelers and groups, lasting one or more days, with Canadian canoes and kayaks, equipment, an introductory briefing, and passenger transfers, as well as special offers for groups and families. Check current packages before your trip. In Weilburg, themed and costumed tours of the Baroque residence are available. The navigable ship tunnel there was built between 1844 and 1847 and, together with the cupola lock at its lower entrance, forms a technical monument. It is Germany’s oldest and longest navigable ship tunnel.
