The French inscription above the portal of the small Waldensian church gives Gewissenruh a tangible point of connection to its cultural history. Together with the story of the Waldensian colony, it offers an introduction to the village’s history; the Weser Cycle Route and views across the Weser Valley add a landscape and routes perspective.

From colony to Waldensian church

Gewissenruh was founded in 1722 as a Waldensian colony for twelve Waldensian families from the Val Cluson. The small fieldstone church, the Waldensian church, was built in 1779. There are 57 years between the founding of the village and the construction of the church. The two dates therefore mark different milestones: 1722 denotes the founding of the colony, while 1779 marks the construction of the church. The origin of the twelve families in the Val Cluson is also part of the village’s specific historical context.

Above the entrance portal of the Waldensian church is the French inscription: “CERTES LETERNEL EST EN CE LIEU ET JE N'AN SAVOIE RIEN”. The church is a small fieldstone church. Its key is available at the house opposite; check before your visit whether it can be provided for your chosen time.

Cultural program and planning your visit

Known as the “Church of Books,” the Waldensian church hosts a cultural program with readings and music once a month instead of church services. If you would like to attend, check the specific event date before your trip and adjust your travel dates accordingly if needed. No registration is required for events; admission is generally free. These are two different reasons to visit: the church and its historic architectural details, and the monthly event featuring readings and music.

The Weser Valley and route connections

Gewissenruh is a quiet, state-recognized health resort in the Weser Valley, away from the federal highway and right on the edge of the Reinhardswald forest. The village offers wonderful views across the Weser Valley. This setting complements its cultural and historical focus with a tangible connection to the landscape.

The Weser Cycle Route passes directly by the village. Another route to note is the Märchenlandweg stage from Lippoldsberg to Bad Karlshafen, which passes through Gewissenruh. The route details differ: the cycle route passes by the village, while the stage has named endpoints—Lippoldsberg and Bad Karlshafen—and runs through Gewissenruh. If you would like to include a route in your stay, you can distinguish between the cycle route and this specific stage.

The “Märchenfähre” ferry connects Lippoldsberg and Gewissenruh. Its operating conditions may vary. If you are considering the crossing as part of your plans, check the current timetable and conditions in advance. The ferry is a separate connection to note, in addition to the routes mentioned above.

Plan your stay

When choosing your travel dates, consider which focus matters most to you: the cultural program runs monthly, while the Weser Cycle Route and the Märchenlandweg offer different route connections. If you choose Gewissenruh as your overnight base, you can plan around the reason for your visit. Check the event date, and include the ferry only if it is relevant to your stay.
