The fountain temple at Gesundbrunnen, museums with a range of historical connections, and several routes that pass through Hofgeismar offer visitors a variety of ways to spend their time. Hofgeismar is located directly in Reinhardswald Nature Park. When planning your visit, you can explore architectural and local history, take a walk at Gesundbrunnen, or enjoy hiking and cycling trails.

Fountain Temple and Gesundbrunnen

The fountain temple at Gesundbrunnen was built in 1790/92 by Simon Louis du Ry on the site of two earlier buildings. It rests on eight Ionic columns and houses the mineral spring’s enclosure. Its construction period, architect, and predecessor buildings provide a clear historical context for the architecture; the temple is also directly connected with the mineral spring. Today, the former spa facilities at Gesundbrunnen invite visitors to enjoy a pleasant weekend stroll.

Museums spanning different periods

The Hofgeismar Town Museum was founded in 1938 as the Municipal Collections of Local History and is the oldest museum in the Kassel district. The Pharmacy Museum is housed in the historic Steinerne Haus, one of the region’s oldest surviving buildings, dating from 1239. Together, they offer a focus on local history and the history of pharmacy.

After renovation and refurbishment, the Pharmacy Museum operated as a private museum for 30 years. This earlier period of use included pharmacy furnishings, the production of medicines, a specialist study library, and a herb garden. These subjects range from furnishings and production to specialist literature and botany, and relate to the museum’s former use.

Hiking trails and cultural route

The Diemeltal Butterfly Trail and the Weserbergland Trail, a quality hiking trail, pass through Hofgeismar and its districts. The Huguenot and Waldensian Trail, a European Cultural Route, also passes through the town and its districts. The type of route is a useful distinction when choosing: the Weserbergland Trail is specifically designated as a quality hiking trail, while the Huguenot and Waldensian Trail is notable for its designation as a European Cultural Route.

Cycling from Hofgeismar

Brunnenkirche is located on the Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R4 and has carried the EKD’s recognized Cycling Church designation since 2024. If you want to take this designation into account when planning your current trip, check its status in advance. Another cycling option is the specially signposted Märchenland Cycle Loop, which starts in Hofgeismar and runs through the entire nature park.

These two cycling options offer different points of reference: Brunnenkirche is on the R4, while the Märchenland Cycle Loop starts in Hofgeismar and runs through the nature park. This can help you choose between a long-distance cycle route passing by the church and a loop for a ride through the nature park.
