Jossa is located in the Spessart Nature Park. The “Sinnwiesen” nature reserve, a European Cultural Cycle Route and a Spessart Spur give the town specific nature and activity themes; the history of the Protestant church is another point of interest. For your planning, you can distinguish between the cycle route and the hike by distance and route.

Cycling along the Jossa

The “Pearls of the Jossa” European Cultural Cycle Route is about 33 kilometres long and runs along the River Jossa. It leads from the Bavarian enclave of Emmerichsthal via Sinntal-Jossa through the Jossgrund valley to Villbach. The route is marked with a yellow EU boat on a blue background.

Sinntal-Jossa also connects to the Hessian Long-Distance Cycle Route R2 and the Rhönexpress Bahn Cycle Route. Take these connections into account separately from the Cultural Cycle Route when choosing your route. As local signs may change, check the waymarking before setting off.

Hiking the Spessart Spur

The “Jossa-Sinn-Blick” Spessart Spur is 5.3 kilometres long and starts at the sports ground in Sinntal-Jossa. It first follows the River Jossa, then takes varied, well-marked meadow and forest paths to Hoheleite. On the way back, there are views of a picturesque railway viaduct spanning the Jossa valley. Compared with the cycle route, the Spessart Spur differs in length, activity and route: here you walk along meadow and forest paths, while the Cultural Cycle Route follows the river.

Nature and local history

The “Sinnwiesen” nature reserve stretches through Hesse from Sinntal-Altengronau to Sinntal-Jossa. The protected area therefore extends to Sinntal-Jossa and offers another connection with nature when planning a visit to Jossa.

The foundation stone of the Protestant church in Jossa was laid on 2 May 1909; it was consecrated in 1910. The Kneipp facility is located in the “In den Joßwiesen” recreation area in Jossa, Spessartgrund. If you plan to visit the facility, check that it is currently open for use.

Culture in the wider destination of Sinntal

Relics of a church more than 500 years old have been preserved in the Church of the Ascension in Sinntal-Altengronau. These include a sacrament niche made from a section of the old church wall, which was incorporated into the new building. The Old Jewish Cemetery is also in Sinntal-Altengronau. This historic cultural monument has more than 1,400 identified gravestones. The first graves were laid out in 1680; the cemetery has been preserved in its original state. Access is subject to religious calendar restrictions. Check the latest information before visiting.

The annual fritillary festival is held in Sinntal-Altengronau at the end of April; free guided tours offer the chance to explore the fritillary meadows. Dates and arrangements may vary, so check the information for the relevant year.
