Half-timbered architecture, a smithing tradition and granite architecture offer three very different ways to explore Gadernheim’s local history. The former town hall houses a local history museum, the Roß smithy is still operating as a smithy, and the Metzendorf Church dates from 1913. Visits to the museum must be arranged in advance. The buildings can also be distinguished by their materials and dates: from half-timbering to the smithy building to the church made of Gadernheim granite.

Building history and craftsmanship in Gadernheim

Gadernheim’s former town hall is a half-timbered building dating from 1617 to 1619. Today, it houses a local history museum featuring rocks from the surrounding area. Visits are possible only by prior arrangement, so plan this as an activity to coordinate in advance rather than as a regular museum visit. Both the historic building and the local collection are among the things you can expect to see there.

The historic Roß smithy is listed as a protected monument and is still operating as a smithy. The village’s oldest documented mention, dated to 1608, is associated with the building of the smithy. This connects the smithy to an early period in local history and to continued craft use. Its date differs from that of the former town hall, which was built more than a century later.

The Metzendorf Church was built in 1913 in the Heimatstil style, using local Gadernheim granite. Its design includes a granite façade, sandstone details and wooden shingles. The original interior is also well preserved. In contrast to the half-timbering of the former town hall, different building materials and a different architectural form take centre stage here. Gadernheim thus brings together several architectural themes: half-timbering, a smithy building, and a church featuring granite, sandstone and wood.

In the wider destination of Lautertal (Odenwald)

The Kaiserturm commemorates Kaiser Wilhelm I and was built of stone in 1906/07; it was preceded by a wooden tower. The 34-metre-high tower stands on Neunkirchener Höhe, the highest point in Lautertal. Details of its construction date, predecessor and height give this viewpoint its own historical context within the wider destination of Lautertal (Odenwald).

Lautertal offers different types of routes for hikers. Krehberg, between Seidenbuch and Schannenbach, has several viewpoints as well as numerous shorter and longer hiking trails. By contrast, the digital 12-Dörfer-Rundwanderweg Lautertal is described as a continuous 41.32-kilometre route that passes through all of Lautertal’s districts. It is not marked on the ground. These descriptions distinguish a route with a specified total distance from the varied hiking trails on Krehberg.

The Striethteich pond brings together landscape and cultural features. It lies between Elmshausen and the “Selterswasserhäuschen”; numerous waterbirds have their own island there. A water-powered model of the Deichertsmühle stands on the shore. The pond hosts the Teichfest every year on Father’s Day. If the festival is important to your travel plans, check the date for the year in question. The “Roter Strich” hiking trail passes through Elmshausen by the Striethteich pond and climbs to the ridge between Felsberg and Amalienhöhe.

Further contrasts can be found in the views and route profiles: from Seidenbacher Eck, the panorama extends across the Odenwald from northeast to southwest. On the Felsenmeer-Rundweg L1, the steepest climb is between Kuralpe and the summit of Felsberg, where the Ohlyturm stands. The Felsenmeer Information Centre offers guided tours on the geological formation of the Felsenmeer. In the wider Lautertal area, panoramic views, hiking trails and geological tours therefore offer different highlights to choose from.
