Brieskow-Finkenheerd can be explored through its waters, paths and art. Lake Brieskow, the walk along the Friedrich Wilhelm Canal and the canoe trip from Lossow to Lebus offer different ways to explore the town and its surroundings. There is also a garden visit by appointment and art venues with a range of focuses. When planning your visit, therefore, consider both your chosen activity and its visiting requirements.

Lake Brieskow and its shores

Lake Brieskow is a tributary lake directly connected to the Oder. It is around three kilometres long and covers 54 hectares. From its mouth near Lossow, it extends as far as the municipality of Brieskow-Finkenheerd. The shoreline landscape can also be understood from its dimensions: the lake is between 150 and 250 metres wide, with an average depth of around one to three metres. Its depth varies with the water level of the Oder.

There is a historic judges’ tower by the lake. If you are interested in fishing, note the local restriction on the west shore: fishing is prohibited from the northern edge of the sheet-pile wall to the level of the judges’ tower. Check local notices before fishing.

Walk along the canal or canoe to Lebus

A walking route leads from Brieskow-Finkenheerd towards Wiesenau along the Friedrich Wilhelm Canal to the former lock keeper’s cottage. The canal was completed in 1668 under the Great Elector Frederick William. Those interested in the history of the waterway will find a specific historic connection along the walk; its destination is the former lock keeper’s cottage.

Another option is the 20-kilometre canoe trip. It starts at Lake Brieskow near Lossow and leads to Lebus, taking you beyond the immediate area of the town. Its starting point and destination give the trip its own distinctive route. Check the current access conditions for the trip before planning.

Garden visit and metalwork

At the Japanese Garden World, a 45-minute garden visit is available by appointment. Arrange your visit with the provider if you would like to include this in your itinerary.

At Olaf Hannemann’s studio, you can view artistic metalwork, sculptures, metal garden art, wind chimes and lamps. The various works show metal in different artistic forms and applications for the home and garden. Contact the workshop directly before visiting.

The Linden Gallery and Atelier TG542 offer other artistic focuses. The Linden Gallery presents works by Marit Tantarn, combining painting and ceramics. At Atelier TG542, visitors can view the artist’s latest works. Please arrange your visit with the studio in advance.

Nature watching in the surrounding area

In the surrounding area of Brieskow-Finkenheerd, the Ziltendorf floodplain lies in Aurith, a river meadow landscape between the Oder and the Oder–Spree Canal. Birdwatching is possible there year-round. This adds a distinct nature-watching option to the themes of lake and canal; the floodplain is in Aurith, not within the municipality of Brieskow-Finkenheerd.
