Lebus offers different perspectives on its landscape and local history: from the castle hill, the view stretches along the Oder, while the Natura Trail links several FFH areas. In Mallnow, spring blossoms on the Oder slopes, an artwork depicting the formation of the landscape, and information about the village’s development add to the experience. When planning your visit, you can choose between a 36-kilometre circular route and individual nature and history themes.
Oder Slopes and Natura Trail
The “Steppe Flora in the Lebus Region” Natura Trail is a 36-kilometre circular cycling route. It links four FFH areas of European importance: the Oderberge Lebus Nature Reserve, the Zeisigberg Nature Reserve, the Preister Gorge and the Mallnow Oder Slopes. The route starts at the car park for the Oderberge Lebus FFH area. Its section near Lebus follows the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route as far as the Podelzig-Klessin turn-off. Trail conditions may vary; check them locally before setting out. This gives you both the full route and the specifically described section near Lebus to consider when planning your trip.
The Oder slopes near Mallnow are also strongly tied to the seasons: in spring, pheasant’s-eye flowers bloom first, followed later by horned violets and cowslips. The plants therefore bloom in succession, not all at the same time. If you want to focus on this particular flora, spring is the ideal time to visit. This natural attraction differs from the local and architectural history themes, which are available year-round.
Castle Hill and Parish Church
From the castle hill in Lebus, you can enjoy panoramic views along the Oder and far into Poland. Below the castle hill stands the parish church, the landmark of the Lower Town. It was rebuilt in 1806 and served as the town church until 1945. After being destroyed in the Second World War, it was rebuilt in its present size in 1954. The castle hill is associated with views of the Oder, while the church tells the story of a prominent building.
Landscape and Village History in Mallnow
In the district of Mallnow, the formation of the landscape and the history of the village are presented in different ways. The Adonis Spring at the southwestern end of the village green is an artwork by artist Roland Rother that illustrates the formation of the landscape in time-lapse. Brown information boards describe the development of the village and its residents. The spring adds an artistic perspective on the landscape, while the boards explore the history of the place and its people. Mallnow also has a petting zoo with enclosures and aviaries where you can see farm animals. If you plan to visit, check in advance when it is open to visitors.
