Lichtenberg is nestled among fields and woodland, and is also located on the Way of St. James. The village is also home to the Bismarck Tower, with a small seating area at the northern edge of the village, and a moderately difficult hiking route. These offer a range of outdoor experiences: a connection to a pilgrimage route, a specifically described hike, and a place to pause and rest.

Landscape, the Way of St. James and the hiking route

A 10.3-kilometre, moderately difficult route passes through the Biegener Hellen Landscape Protection Area and along a chain of small lakes formed during the Ice Age. It leads to Lichtenberg via the Vorwerk Lichtenberg estate. The route’s length and difficulty provide two clear points of reference for planning your hike, while the lakes and protected area also shape the landscape along the way. The Way of St. James is another point of interest in the village. It is a distinct aspect of Lichtenberg’s location, alongside the specifically described hiking route.

Bus route 982 is also useful for getting your bearings: Hohenwalde and Lichtenberg are easily accessible on this route. If you plan to use the bus, check the timetable for your travel date. This keeps your choice of route and your journey there as two separate decisions, rather than assuming a particular connection to the hiking route.

Bismarck Tower, farm shop and late-summer open-air cinema

The Bismarck Tower in Lichtenberg is a 5.70-metre-high fire column with no viewing function. It is a sightseeing attraction on the Frankfurt (Oder) district route, the Discovery Tour. At the northern edge of the village, a small seating area by the tower invites visitors to pause and rest. If you are expecting a viewpoint, note the distinction: the fire column is a landmark, not a place to enjoy a view from above.

Another local option is the farm shop selling agricultural produce. In late summer, there is also open-air cinema at the Lichtenberg church ruins. If you plan to visit during your stay, it is a good idea to check the specific event dates in advance.

Frankfurt (Oder) as a broader destination

Frankfurt (Oder) has its own urban cultural attractions. The Kleist Museum’s interactive permanent exhibition explores the life, work and legacy of Heinrich von Kleist in the city where he was born and studied. It is scheduled to run until 11 December 2026; if you are travelling after that date, check the exhibition’s current status. The concert hall “Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach” also houses a multimedia permanent exhibition about the composer’s life, work and legacy. The two exhibitions have different focuses: one on Kleist’s biography and influence, the other on Bach.

The river landscape around Frankfurt has its own distinct character. The Alte Oder and the Winter Harbour follow a former course of the Oder and form numerous side channels. From the Holzmarkt in the city centre, you can look out over Ziegenwerder Island, with its groynes, floodplain and northern tip. Stroll along the banks on the Oder Promenade, passing sights and artworks; passenger boats depart seasonally from the landing stage there for boat trips. Check their operating information before making plans.

For culture enthusiasts, the Kleist Route in Frankfurt (Oder) has five stops through urban areas and parks, leading to monuments and places associated with Heinrich von Kleist (1777–1811) and Ewald Christian von Kleist (1715–1759). The Kleist Museum is right on the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route. Themed tours for groups and school classes can be arranged on request; check booking arrangements before your trip.
