Frankfurt (Oder) lies on the western bank of the Oder, a border river. The river landscape and cultural offerings related to Heinrich von Kleist, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach and modern art are central to a stay here. Exhibitions, the riverside promenade and the Kleist Route offer different points of interest, so you can shape your stay around the landscape, literature or art.
The Oder Riverbank and River Landscape
The Alte Oder and the Winterhafen date back to an earlier course of the Oder and form numerous side channels. From Holzmarkt in the city centre, you can look out towards Ziegenwerder Island, with its groynes, floodplain and northern tip. This viewpoint offers an unobstructed view of the river landscape; the Oder promenade, by contrast, invites you to stroll along the river past sights and artworks. If you would like to include a trip on the water in your plans, seasonal boat tours on passenger vessels are available from the landing stage on the Oder promenade. Check operating dates before your trip, as the service is seasonal.
Kleist, Bach and Modern Art
The Kleist Museum’s interactive permanent exhibition is dedicated to the life, work and influence of Heinrich von Kleist. Frankfurt (Oder) is his birthplace and the city where he studied, connecting the writer with the place through the exhibition. The current exhibition is scheduled to run until 11 December 2026. If you are travelling later, check its status. The museum organises individual themed tours for groups and school classes on request; confirm booking arrangements before your trip.
Another exhibition can be seen at the “Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach” Concert Hall: it houses a multimedia permanent exhibition about the composer’s life, work and legacy. It provides a cultural focus distinct from that of the Kleist Museum. The Brandenburg State Museum of Modern Art has two locations in Frankfurt (Oder): the Packhof at Carl-Philipp-Emanuel-Bach-Straße 11 and the Rathaushalle at Marktplatz 1. Literature, music and modern art are therefore distinct themes you can take into account when planning your stay.
Literary Sites and a Cycling Route
The Kleist Route comprises five stops and passes through urban areas and parks, visiting monuments and places associated with Heinrich von Kleist (1777–1811) and Ewald Christian von Kleist (1715–1759). Their different dates of life help distinguish the two, while the route also shows that Kleist-related sites are not confined to a single exhibition space. If you would like to explore Heinrich von Kleist in greater depth, you can treat the route as a complement to a museum visit.
Cyclists also have a specific cultural connection to explore: the Kleist Museum is located directly on the Oder–Neisse Cycle Route. You can therefore factor in the museum as a point of interest when planning a trip along this route. The Kleist Route and the cycle route offer different points of reference: one covers five stops associated with the two Kleists in urban areas and parks, while the other passes directly by the museum. Together with the walking paths along the Oder, they offer a choice of literary sites, art and river landscapes, without requiring every interest to have the same focus.
