Saathain lies west of Elsterwerda at the confluence of the Schwarze Elster and Große Röder rivers. The surrounding landscape is shaped by floodplain forests along the Schwarze Elster, the Röder and the Röder Canal. The confluence locates Saathain itself; the floodplain forests describe the surrounding area.

Saathain: Exhibitions and Culture

Exhibitions are held in the newly renovated rooms of the redesigned Saathain estate, while cultural events take place in the former stables. You can therefore choose between attending an exhibition and going to an event. If you are travelling specifically for a particular event, check its date in advance so you can plan your visit around the programme you want to see.

Cycling, Hiking and Fishing on the Rafting Canal

The Grödel-Elsterwerda Rafting Canal runs through Röderland and is now used for cycling and hiking tours. It is also considered a paradise for anglers. This brings different interests together along the same canal: a cycling or hiking tour focuses on exercise, while fishing offers a different way to spend time by the water. When planning your day, you can choose between a tour on foot or by bike and fishing as a separate focus.

Elbe-Elster as the Wider Region

The wider travel destination of Elbe-Elster offers additional attractions. The Louise briquette factory in Domsdorf is Europe’s oldest preserved briquette factory; visitors can experience working historic technology and discover steam engines there. The Plessa power station is one of Europe’s oldest lignite-fired power stations and has retained its original structure. Visitors can see authentic power station technology from the 1920s there. The guided “Path of Coal” tour passes through the outdoor bunker, boiler house, turbine hall, control room and transformer area. Check the booking conditions before planning to take part. The 200-kilometre “Coal, Wind and Water Tour” brings the history of energy production to life through the elements. The F60 visitor mine is in Elbe-Elster district, south of Lichterfeld. Visitors to the mine can explore the neighbouring Bergheider See by bicycle, Segway or on a walk along the long beach.

Nature experiences and regional culture are also part of the wider travel destination of Elbe-Elster. On outings with a ranger from the nature conservation service, visitors can identify birdsong, find rare plants and observe animals; dates may vary. The 65-kilometre Apple Route offers a guided tour of the Pomological Garden in Döllingen. Check current dates if you plan to take the tour. Wine has been grown again on the southern slope of the Langer Berg in Schlieben since 1992; more than 2,000 vines of the “Müller-Thurgau” and “Bacchus” varieties now grow there. A guided tour lets you discover and taste Schlieben wine; packages may change.
